44. At Peace

Even though he had feared death for most of his life, ultimately, when he was staring it in the gaunt face, he felt he was at peace with his fate.

He had lived a long, full life, after all, and what more could one wish for? Having been a warrior for almost his entire adult life, he had seen so much death, and had survived equal amounts of it.

Mostly, he was thankful that he got to die doing what he did best: facing danger head-on.

As his shield splintered, and he saw the mighty blade coming for his chest, he didn't so much as blink.
