Nothing sours a relationship quite as effectively as neglect. Something they sadly discovered the hard way.
The worst of it all was, that once there had been true potential for something great, a love that could have lasted. But without any sort of energy or work put in, a relationship never goes anywhere. It won't go out with a bang, sure, but it won't get you to world-conquering love status either.
And with their love fizzled out, there was nothing left for them to do but silently collect the few remaining embers, and move on with their lives.
