The next day's morning event was... terrible. Points were being lost, students were falling out, and senseis were fighting.I managed to score a number of points for Miyagi-Do during the matches and weapons sparring, but not nearly as many as we needed. I managed to win a few rounds, but it wasn't enough.
Everyone on the team, besides me and Miguel, seemed like they were unfocused. They argued between each other, they missed key opportunities to score points...
By the end of the events that day, the Iron Dragons were in the lead with 32 points. Furia De Pantera—the dojo of the girl who won't stop staring at Eli—was in second place with 30 points. Then Cobra Kai was in third place with 28 points.
Miyagi-Do was in... eleventh.
I left the events that day feeling stressed out of my mind. There were so many skilled fighters surrounding me—hitting me harder than I'd ever been hit before.
Winning in this tournament was going to be a team effort, but with all of the arguing and passive aggression, I wasn't sure how long Miyagi-Do would hold out.
After the first event was over and we had changed back into our normal clothes, the senseis gathered us in the lobby of the hotel.
"Everyone, listen up," Mr. LaRusso spoke. "All right, this morning's event was tough, but let's not get discouraged just yet. We have two more events today. Eliminations don't begin till the second one."
"Woah, woah, woah," Demetri spoke quickly. "If that wasn't the elimination round, what is? Getting our heads cut off with swords?"
"We knew this wasn't gonna be easy," Mr. LaRusso answered while shaking his head. "We're going up against the best dojos in the world, but don't forget that you guys are one of them too."
"Yeah, so you better start fighting like it," Sensei spoke firmly after.
"Johnny, come on, man," Mr. LaRusso scolded him, before looking back at us. "The best thing you can do right now is just clear your minds, get some rest—you know, put this behind you. You got this, all right? I believe in you."
Then the group dispersed, as the students started making their way back to their hotel rooms. The boys got off on the third floor, while Sam and I stayed in the elevator to get up to the eighth one.
When it was just Sam and I, I let out a long sigh. "What happened out there today was really... embarrassing," I said.
Sam looked at me before nodding. "We all did terribly," she agreed. "But it would help if our senseis got on the same page. Johnny needs to start working with my dad better."
I looked at her and scoffed. "Well, I mean, I don't think it's all Sensei's fault..."
Before I could continue, the elevator stopped on the fifth floor. The door opened, before the female captain of the Iron Dragons, Zara, came walking in, speaking loudly to her phone.
"What's up everyone? It's your queen of karate here," Zara said. She kept talking to her phone as she pressed the button for the seventh floor, all without acknowledging us. "Just finished our second Sekai Taikai event, where the Dragons absolutely slayed. Although, it was awesome to see other badass girls of karate fighting out there."
Then Zara glanced back for the first time, acknowledging Sam first. She looked her up and down quickly, before looking over at me. She smiled and angled her phone towards me.
"Like this one," Zara said.
She was live-streaming, and a little over 200k people were watching. Damn, I thought. But since the audience could see me, I smiled lightly, before Zara continued.
