Leaving Foxfire is not the end of the world, nor is it the only girl who arrived last year. After fleeing, he left the city to avoid new killer lands in the country. When the Soviet Union tried to sign a new treaty with Alvin-Ogre, the guerrillas went to the capital and helped destroy half of the city.
I didn't know the Russians lived in the Elvin world. Also I didn't know "a member of a small independent group taking part in irregular fighting, typically against larger regular forces" went to destroy the capital, though that kind off perfectly describes Sophie, and her group.
Here is the orginal: She wasn't the same girl she'd been the year before, who though failing out of Foxfire would be the end of the world. Now she'd been kidnapped, presumed dead, banished from the Lost Cities, and helped stop a plague from killing off the entire gnomish species. She'd even snuck into the ogres' capital and helped destroy half the city--which happened to be why the Council was struggling to negotiated a new elvin-ogre treaty.
