A/N: I'm so happy! They released the cover! Sophie looks different, though. Oh well, it's so pretty!

I peeked in the door of Johnny's hospital room. Sophie was holding a black cuff out to Tess.

"Evelyn!" Johnny said, smiling. "Come on in." His dark eyes looked over me, making sure I was okay.

"Johnny." I whispered, "I was so scared you'd..." I trail off, unable to say it. Without him, I'd probably be dead.

---Flashback---

"Evelyn! You get back here!" my mom shouted. I was nine, and Johnny had just turned twelve.

I crashed into Johnny as I tried to run from her. "Hey, what's wrong?" he asked, grabbing my arm. His grip was firm, but gentle.

"S-she-" I stammered.

"She's after you?" he asked, able to understand me, without words. I nod.

"I forgot to get milk." I whispered.

"I went grocery shopping." Johnny said, "I forgot the milk. It wasn't you, it was me." By now, our mom could hear him.

"Johnny-" I said, scared for his life. He was my rock. He always had been my rock. If he wasn't there, I don't know what I would do.

"It was me!" he shouted, his eyes filled with fear. "Stay in our room." he whispered. He stayed with me, so they wouldn't beat me. He always protected me, often at the cost of his well-being.

I could see the desperation and determination in his eyes. "Okay." I whispered, "I love you."

"I know. I love you too." he whispered, before she descended on him, full of rage. I ran to our room and hid, unable to do anything, except listen to his pleas for help.

"Please!" he screamed, the sound haunting me. "Stop!" I couldn't do anything except sob, knowing I had let my brother take my punishment.

An hour passed, before the screaming stopped. I eased the door open a crack, praying that Johnny was still alive. I saw his body in the corner, and walked over to him.

"Johnny?" I whispered, "Johnny, please." He had a pulse. I dragged him back to our room, and shut the door.

"Evelyn?" he groaned, rubbing his head, where I could see a large shiner.

"Ssh, don't speak." I whispered, taking a cloth, and wetting it from a glass of water we kept for such occasions.

---Flashback over---

"I'm fine. That thing Sophie had-"

"The Burn Balm." she said.
