THE GOD'S GAMBIT

Sorrow spread across the usually cheerful God's house today. The striking white walls looked a tad dull, those majestic sculpted pillars didn't look that regal today; that carved golden gate was suddenly starting to turn black a little. And all of that just because of a simple request from the sweet little daughter of God.

"I want to go on a vacation papa," she had pleaded two days ago.

"Sweetheart, you know I can't leave the house now. We'll go when your mother comes back," the God had defended.

But even the God was helpless before a small pleading child. After a long session of arguing from the both sides, finally God had to give up. He had to agree to take his daughter for a vacation on the moon.

But only the God knew that it was better said than done. There were not one but many complications on the way. The Goddess was off to secure a peace treaty with a demon. This demon had been giving the God some trouble with the operations of Earth recently; and so, this truce was very important.

The God can surely not call the Goddess back, and now with him agreeing to go; a massive question loomed in the space – Who will watch over the humans for the next two months?

The God connected with the Goddess via the star-link in order to find a solution to this impeding problem.

"Can you manage the Earth's account remotely from there?" the God asked

"It would be very difficult," the Goddess refused, "I get very little time. There are many middlemen to convince before I get to talk to the demon, and its not an easy job."

The God could understand her situation. he knew how demanding those middlemen can get, asking for stars and meteors before opening the gates. But he knew how good the Goddess was at this convincing job. Just watching her made him forget half his worries. No one can match her beauty in that white dress, and the golden edges just accented the imperial look. For some time, the god was lost in her sea blue eyes.

"Can't you do it from the moon," the Goddess asked watching the God silent.

"Na...no," the God said jolting back to senses, "You know the 5G connectivity on moon isn't sufficient enough for the job."

"Oh yes, I can understand," the Goddess shared the concern.

The line went silent for some time as both began to think of a solution. Suddenly, a bright yellow ring glowed above the Goddess' head as she got an idea.

"How about the prince?" she asked, "he's home for holidays anyway."

What on the heaven! The god thought. He couldn't believe that someone like her could give such a horrific idea. Give the reins to the prince, no, never. The God remembered the last time Prince had snuck into the control room. He erupted a volcano and drowned two cities in floods.

"Are you out of mind," the God flared.

"Yes, I mean, no," the Goddess faltered a little, "I know what you are thinking, but you strictly warn him this time, that he had to just watch the proceedings and call you if something went wrong."

God still had a massive doubt in his head about this, but guess, he wasn't left with any other option.

"The Prince it will be then," he agreed, "but keep this in mind, if anything goes wrong, like anything, you will be the one to clean that mess."

"Okay my lord," the Goddess smiled, melting the God's heart in an instant.

Next week, before the God and little Princess boarded their space chariot, God handed over his user-Id and password to the Prince. He warned the Prince in the strictest words he could conjure, that he had to just sit there and watch the things go by. He was not supposed to touch any of the controls without the God's consent.

But he also knew that just a warning won't be enough, so he decided to throw in a temptation as well.

"If these two months go by smoothly, I will give you half the controls of Mercury."

The Prince jumped up with excitement and assured the God to leave all the worries on this golden gate and enjoy the vacation.

Two weeks flew past quickly without anything interesting. The Prince was soon bored to just sit there and watch the humans trot along with their daily business.

He watched a girl as she lost herself in some book sitting at the same table in the same café everyday. He watched as the waiter of that café locked his gaze on the girl, waiting for the right moment. He watched as a strangely dressed man with a big hat walked past that café, stopping outside just to stare in, but never actually enter. And then there was that girl who drove past the café everyday, observing the peculiarly dressed man stare through the glass.

And that's how it happened everyday. None of them tried to do anything different. The prince was tired of watching the same movie roll by for two weeks. There was just no excitement in the air. So, he decided to throw in a pinch of it in their lives.

The Prince selected the four humans on his screen and turned the knob of the excitement meter from 0 to 3. But what did he know that even a little change in the proceedings could turn fatal in their lives.

Because the demon was waiting on the other side of dial, ready to pounce on opportunities like this.
