you walked into the pantry and grabbed a bag of chocolate chips that sat on the shelve. you bring them back into the kitchen and set them on the counter. luke stands across from you and he grabs the bag off of the counter. he cuts it open and pours the entire bag into the bowl on the counter.

"i don't think that's right, luke," you say laughing at your boyfriend. you and him were currently trying to make a cake for ellen's birthday. luke had just poured a whole bag of chocolate chips into the cake.

"maybe it's not, but you have to agree this will make it so much better." he says exaggerating his words.

"okay luke, whatever you say. let's just follow the instructions, okay?" you say to him, raising an eyebrow. you reread over the recipe that you had pulled up on your phone. you had already poured the flour and sugar into a bowl and luke had added the chocolate chips. you walked over to the sink and fill up the measuring cup with water, while luke did the same but with the vegetable oil.

"i'll crack one egg and you crack the other one okay, babe?" luke asks you, all too excited to be cracking eggs.

you nod your head at him and crack the egg on the side of the bowl. the egg falls into the bowl and you throw the shell away. suddenly you feel a pressure on your head and feel your hair become sticky. you reach your hand up towards your hair and groan. there is now egg and shell in your hair.

"luke, why?" you ask him, shaking your head at him.

his shoulders shake with laughter as jack walks down the stairs. he enters the kitchen and sticks his fingers into the bowl, wiping the edge of it to get any extra batter off that he can. jack looks up and a smile makes its way onto his lips as he's looking at you. your trying to pick as many pieces of the egg shell out of your hair as you can.

"stop it," you say to him, your words failing you as a smile makes its way onto your lips as well.

you feel the heat from the oven and look over to the side. luke is putting the finished cake into the oven to bake. he sets the timer for one hour.

"so.... what should we do now?" luke asks you directing the question at both you and jack.

"i think we should—,"you say before cutting your self off, throwing an egg at luke's chest. he sputters in response as jack laughs at the both of you.

"oh, you think that's funny?" luke says to jack, raising his eyebrow. luke grabs a handful of flour from the bag at throws it at jack. jack looks at him in shock, his normally black hoodie now coated with flour, you're laughing your head off until he grabs a handful and throws it at you.

"jack, c'mon man," you say to him narrowing your eyes. the egg in your hair and the flour covering your sweatshirt just wasn't fair.

"i thought it was pretty funny." jim says from the kitchen doorway. you didn't even notice he was standing there until he had said something. you can see quinn from behind jim taking a picture of a you with an egg in your hair and flour on your shirt, jack with flour covering his hoodie, and luke with an egg on the front of his shirt.

"oh gosh," you say throwing your head back and groaning. the boys laugh at you and you reach your hand up to try and get the last of the egg shell out of your hair.

________

about an hour later, the cake was ready. about two hours later, it was time to eat the cake. the cake was frosted and ready to go, waiting in the fridge. you and the rest of the hughes family had just gotten back from a celebratory dinner for ellen's birthday. jim told his wife to wait in the dining room while we get the cake ready.

"get the candles," you tell quinn. he walks over to a drawer, opens it, and grabs a plastic bag that has many candles in it. he walks back over to you and hands you the bag. you open up the bag and pick out a few different colored candles. jack places the candles into the cake.

you all decide that luke will walk the cake out to her and jack will record. you turn down the lights and walk into the dining room, where ellen is waiting.

you sing along to the tune of 'happy birthday' with the boys, all of you completely out of tune. ellen smiles and luke places the cake in front of her on the table.

once done singing, ellen blows out her candles, a large smile plastered on her face.

"thanks guys it means—," she gets cut off when luke picks up the cake and smashes it in her face. you all laugh, not expecting that and ellen now has frosting on her face and in her hair.

"boys." ellen groans, wiping frosting off her face.
