August

"But I'm tired."

Taking a deep breath, I exhaled with my eyes closed. Chrysta was sleeping and I was trying to get our son to do his reading for the day. For some reason whenever I did his homework with him, we would go through this.

"Well pack up and go sleep then." I spoke calmly.

"No daddy." He fussed

"Then you ain't tired. You know you gotta read these two pages. You have your weekly test tomorrow and you gotta get it." I wiped his face. "You'on give momma all this stress to read so why you tryna play me."

Taking a breath, he settled himself. Sending him to wash his face, I got a bottle of coconut water for him. Coming back to the table, he drank some and then we got into the reading. Reading both pages effortlessly, when he was finished, I kissed him on his forehead, making him smile.

"Want some pool time?"

"Yes please." He nodded.

"Aight. Pack ya things whea they supposed to be and get ready."

Doing as he was told, I finished his coconut water then went and fixed something for us to eat. Six months into her pregnancy, today was one of those days where Chrys's morning sickness was all day so she slept most of the day away.

"Ready."

Looking over my shoulder, I smiled a he approached me. Spreading his arms, I sprayed him down with the sunblock before we went out back. Being a dad to a seven year old was an eye opening experience. August was everything I asked for in son thus far.

It was funny how as he got older, he began showing more features of me. Chrys wouldn't admit it but everyone saw it and said it.

"Daddy look!"

Giving him my attention, I watched as he dived into the pool and swam to the other end. His love for water never left and his swimming skills were amazing for his age.

"That's right love! You did that!" I applauded him.

Aside from swimming, we also had him in Karate which he enjoyed. Health wise, he was good. We've had a few scares between age five and now but he was in the clear.

"Mommy!"

Looking behind me when he said that, I smiled at the sight of my wife as she came out.

"Having fun?" She asked him.

"Yes!" He yelled then went under water.

Laughing, she came and sat between my legs and leaned back on me. Wrapping my arms around her before caressing her belly, I kissed her on her cheek.

"Had a good sleep?"

"Yeah and I feel better too."

"Great. He completed all his work and reading."

"Music to my ears." She looked up and smiled. "Did he give trouble to read?"

"How you know?" I shook my head. "Talking bout his ass tired. I told him pack up and go nap then."

"And he wasn't tired anymore ent."

"Exactly. Ion know why he does that with me."

"You're the fun parent. I've told you this." She chuckled.

"So are you."

"Yes but you let him get away with more things than I do. So when you get serious with him, that's how he reacts."

"You'd think because of that he'd at least do what he's supposed to do."

"One would like to hope." She patted my leg. "I was thinking we can go out to dinner tonight?"
