A.N. - I present a cackle of gleeful but lethal villains.

Platonic:

Having spent much of their life in the Elephant Graveyard, a desolate hovel that holds more bones than it does life, a full stomach is a paradise for the hyenas. The odd bird or meerkat dinner sustains them, but more ambitious prey are hunted for their friend. Ed stays behind to deter potential invaders, while Banzai and Shenzi defy their banishment by venturing into the Pride Lands.

Sick and solitary animals near the outskirts of the savannah territory are mauled. Shenzi and Banzai boast about their kills, leading to Ed offering a mouthful of his favourite bones. A battle of wills erupts as the trio disputes who fetched the best gift, but their friend is pressured not to discriminate. If one hyena is favoured, the remaining two grow envious and increase their raids on the border to vicious extremes.

Hunting becomes a contest. The hyenas fancy themselves a triad of personal debt collectors, and they chase anyone who has betrayed their friend. To Shenzi, every grudge settled is another assertion of her authority. Banzai throws himself into each mission to win their gratitude, and Ed reaps a sinister type of pleasure from acting in their stead.

Romantic:

Restricted to the barren confines of the Elephant Graveyard, their partner's social interactions are limited to the three hyenas. Shenzi frightens other scavengers, and Banzai spews tales of past hunts in an attempt to garner praise. The vigilant eye of Ed never strays far, boisterous laughter being the sole indicator of his presence.

Discretion is a futile joke to Shenzi. She admits to every misdeed with pride and enjoys flaunting her strength when their partner is especially defiant. Banzai is liable to shirk the topic with a few grumbles and a simple warning, as he dislikes the idea of incurring their scorn and instead pursues whoever he believes corrupted their thinking. Ed practices a more clandestine form of manipulation, presenting various bones and carcasses to entice them to stay.

Adding a degree of menace to his unassuming nature, Ed is remarkably attentive. He watches for signs of distress and ulterior motives while Shenzi and Banzai are laughing themselves into an oblivious haze. Unlike Banzai, flattery is ineffective against him.
