A.N. - What's this?! It's Telltale Batman with a steel chair! Anyway, I can't find content for this fandom unless I dig for it, so this is a holiday gift for like-minded people.

Platonic:

Among the many sensitivities in the relationship, what John struggles with the most is arguments. He cannot handle any long-term disagreement, obsessing over the minor details of the conversation and believing that it spells the downfall of the friendship. Aside from the occasional bout of sarcasm towards his friend, the pivotal sign of his stewing an unresolved conflict is other people, usually Harley or Bruce, commenting on his sullen and irritable mood lately.

John wishes to see only the best in his friend and is capable of deluding himself into finding hidden affection in insults, threats, and betrayals. Because of this, he is quick to forgive most missteps at the time they occur but does not forget as easily, tending to reference the errors and perceived lack of respect at a later date if his friend denies a request or is acting argumentative.

He dreads the thought of his friend having any sort of grievance with him, and John's attempts to clear his name, whether appropriate or unfounded, involve frantic assertions of his innocence and how invaluable the relationship is to him. In his paranoid view of the world, every hint of discomfort and annoyance is the precursor to what he fears is an inevitable abandonment. Each fight could be the one that takes their last bit of patience and convinces them to spend their time elsewhere.

Defending their safety is a key component of the relationship, as John wants to be someone they trust and look to for assistance. Even if he does not know who or what provoked a quarrel, John automatically supports his friend and threatens to inflict serious bodily harm on the opponent. He is eager to attack anyone who starts a physical fight or tries to intimidate them, believing that his friend would do the same for him and that he is demonstrating his ability to care for them.

Romantic:

His partner is someone who John idolizes and wants to imitate in everyday situations, viewing them as a stronger and more admirable person than himself. He tries to start a conversation every time he sees them – sneaking into their cell block past lights-out in Arkham Asylum, crashing social events in the streets – and descends into gushy rambling if they humour him. John fails to maintain any degree of composure in their presence for very long, and he has no sense of time or formality when speaking to them.

These discussions are often lacking in a point and merely a product of John's desire to hold their attention. He hops between a variety of subjects that range from the violent crimes of his fellow rogues to the general despair of Gotham, thrilled to prolong the interaction until either another person interferes or his partner concludes it. If someone does interrupt him or distract his partner, John sweeps himself into an enraged frenzy before even considering why the interruption happened and floods the air with graphic threats unless the offender is Bruce.

As for the masked vigilante's position in the chaos, Bruce eases into the role of a confidante after John vents his frustration with the apparent lack of mutual admiration. John consults him about the most effective way to connect with his partner, accepting the man's advice unconditionally and executing it with overwhelming enthusiasm. He assumes that waiting for them to expose a problem of theirs and reciting the correct string of words will ensure his partner's blind devotion.

Laws and ethics are a question of mood and motivation to John, but they are expendable if his partner is wanting something. Whether the wish is for a bothersome individual to stop pestering them or an article of clothing that exceeds their paycheck, John sees an opportunity to gain their appreciation and delivers retribution on a spectrum. If Batman or Bruce confronts him about serial shoplifting and terrorizing Gothamites, John claims that the deviant behaviour helps him be closer to his partner and expects the vigilante to understand.
