A.N. - Can you tell I was excited to write this? There may be a scenario on the way for this duo, but we'll see if it comes through.

Platonic:

Even though the relationship is supposed to be mutual, Bender aims to be the favourite. His craving for the limelight translates into petty competitions over who can hold their attention the longest and who can make them laugh the loudest. These contests are primarily one-sided, as Fry has few qualms about the situation and is, more often than not, confused by Bender's pride after their friend enjoys one of the robot's jokes more than they did his.

Bender's idea of a fun night out is chugging booze at a dive bar and indulging the underbelly of society via acts of debauchery, while Fry prefers to give their friend tours of the Planet Express building and chat about the various hijinks he has endured throughout his life. The wild and all-consuming nature of partying stops these goals from co-existing, and the duo begrudgingly reaches a compromise by dividing their friend's week between the two of them.

It does not take long for one to intrude on the other's allotted time, usually in the form of either Bender swooping in with complaints of impatience and pressuring their friend to come with him or Fry calling them in hopes of starting a conversation. The most benevolent outcome is a challenging combination of their friend conveniently being hard to find after missions and dedicating their free time to other members of the crew or distant pursuits.

Fry is open to the concept of their friend having a social circle outside of himself and Bender, wishing only to be invited to every outing and becoming disheartened if much time passes between interactions. Bender does not share this generosity and expects them to see him as the most important part of their life. He has little patience for those who seem to enjoy occupying their time and attention, for the thought that a random creature could outshine him aggravates his inner need for recognition.

Bender is an unforgiving powerhouse who deliberately escalates the situation by starting a fight, whereas Fry is the affable half of the duo and prefers to find a peaceful resolution. The robot belittles the perceived competitor with a series of callous taunts designed to have them either crying or admitting their inferiority by the time he finishes. If their friend is present and attempts to intervene, Fry encourages them to stay out of it and only moves to placate Bender if they are adamant.

Romantic:

The rest of the Planet Express crew is subjected to Fry's aimless and verbose discussions about their partner during menial tasks and even on missions. Bender continues this habit when hears that Fry is but gives opposite versions of the same stories, and if anyone has a question about this or their partner in general, Bender acts defensive and accuses the person of being invasive. The responsibility of ending the rambling often falls to Leela, something which earns an apology from Fry and an insult from Bender.

Unless the robot is starved for alcohol or their partner is blatantly shunning him, he is not going to confront Fry at first and instead plummets into a lasting foul mood that snowballs into gross rudeness towards everyone else. Anytime Fry upsets them or fails to help them with something, Bender rushes to present his solution and makes a couple of snide comments about the inherent superiority of machines.

It becomes the delivery boy's job to review the passive-aggressive slights and interruptions of his time with their partner to realize the issue, and Fry's answer is to leave the conversation whenever Bender approaches to effectively force them to interact with the robot. On the other side of the scale, Fry reacts to their partner favouring Bender by waiting for a lull in the conversation to propose that they spend the day with him instead. He promises equal fulfillment and, if he thinks it will improve his chances of success, brings a gift to more or less bribe them.

Thoughtful and moderately honest behaviour is to be found in Fry and not in Bender. The delivery boy expresses his affection via offers of pet lizards and homemade pizza, while Bender swipes anything that looks expensive and can fit into his torso compartment before gifting some of it to their partner. The robot is indifferent to how his actions are perceived by them unless their feedback is positive, in which case Bender pursues increasingly severe crimes to gather their praise.

Fry is sensitive to the emotions and opinions of their partner, and he only betrays their wishes in emergencies or if he believes that he has found a way to impress them. Bender disregards their boundaries and is not afraid to impose his will on them, growing angry when they oppose him and asking forgiveness only if they refuse to acknowledge him or threaten to end the relationship. This difference in attitude is a common source of arguments between the duo.
