(Requested by a friend on Tumblr:  they wanted a platonic Maedhros x human reader! Sorry it took so long T_T like literally I only wrote the first four paragraphs I have gone to google so many times

Author's Notes: This was supposed to be light and fun, I had been planning to make it fun. But where oh where do I insert that so that it fits this timeline of the First Age???? WHERE OH WHERE AND HOW OH HOW DO I DO THIS WITHOUT HAVING TO READ THE WHOLE SILMARILLION AGAIN

Please forgive me I mostly read tolkiengateway for all of this. The book doesn't say how on earth Maglor and Maedhros took Elrond and Elros (like going into detail) nor how they let the twins go. Am I missing something? I tried looking and looking but I think Tolkien has made so many changes I don't know what to do so I just made things up for how Maglor and Maedhros let go of the twins wooooot

Reader was taken in by Maedhros around F.A. 527, following the timeline for First Age on tolkiengateway, and by that time reader was about 15. Then it's up to you when this thing takes place, just place it beyond F.A. 545. Please correct me I really need to reread Silmarillion kenjdakejlnfl

FIRST TIME TO WRITE FOR MAEDHROS I tried I tried I tried

I hope I did justice to this character that is loved by so many T_T

How do you see Maedhros? Like his personality and stuff

Warnings: angst????????)

"Maedhros, have you not learned from your past mistakes? Three kinslayings! Your brothers are dead and only you and Maglor are left! Is it not enough for you to put a stop to this?"

His hair turned into different shades of red as the light of the setting sun that passed through the window touched his figure. Tall he was yet to you he looked as if he was about to break. His shoulders and jaws were tense. With his left hand he held the wrist of his right arm—it was something you observed he did whenever he was troubled or in deep thought or trying to hold back his anger.

"I know what I am doing, (Y/N)." Maedhros averted his gaze. It unsettled him to have to glare at you. "It is something we must do to regain what is rightfully ours."

"Is it still a must if it has caused so much grief not only to you but to others as well?" you pressed on. "Blood has been spilled countless times. You have taken lives. This Oath has driven you and your brothers to madness."

"Madness?" His voice was seething. "Madness is you who wishes to reprimand me about things that does not concern you. Madness is you who tries to reason with me when you have only heard information from other people. You have not lived long enough nor will you ever live long enough to know and understand."

It was a touchy subject, to talk about your mortality and how the people you cared for were immortal. Maedhros and Maglor would often tell you that Men were capable of great things that even the Elves could not do. Amrod and Amras would tell you that Men were gifted and more fortunate when they were still living. They tell you this not only to lighten your heart, but also to remind them that indeed even the ones who lived the longest, the ones deemed to be the wisest, can make mistakes that can never be forgiven.

You were hurt but you reminded yourself that this was Maedhros. Albeit most of the time his judgement was sound and firm, his anger and the pull of the Oath took that control away. And as a friend of his, and the only person with them that wasn't held back by the Oath, you took it as your responsibility to help him out.

"I have not lived as long as you nor will I ever live as long as you have. And I admit that I am not the wisest, and what I know I have only heard from you and other people's stories. But it does not mean that I am incapable of knowing what is right and what is wrong," you said. You were trying to look strong, but at that point your voice broke. "It does not mean I do not know how it feels to lose people that I care for. It does not mean I do not know how it feels to be afraid, to be sad, to feel grief, to feel pain, to feel love."

Maedhros turned his back to you and placed himself down onto the floor. Hearing your voice break and seeing tears in your eyes stirred something in him. "If you feel such things for the people who have taken from us what is rightfully ours, then you are free to leave."

He thought you would leave, after all that he had said, after all that he and his brothers had done. But to his surprise you approached him and kneeled in front of him. You stayed there for some time until at last he met your eyes. There was wonder and sadness and gratefulness in them.

"Why do you not leave?" he asked.

"I feel such things for those people but I also feel them for you and Maglor and Amrod and Amras." You offered him a sad smile. "You have taken me in when I was young, treated me like your own child when I was little, treated me as your friend when I grew up. We lost Amrod and Amras and I do not forget the pain I felt and how difficult it was to look at your grief-stricken faces. I do not want to lose you and Maglor too."

A gentle hand reached out to hold his. Tears started to fall from his eyes and run down his cheeks. He looked at you and for the first time in your life, you weren't the one who looked lost and afraid. Maedhros looked as if he was pleading, asking for you for help, asking for your guidance, asking for a way out.

But you could also see that he had already accepted what he perceived to be his end.

"This is our fate, (Y/N)," he whispered, shaking his head.

"We can still find a way," you said. "There's always hope. We... We..."

Maedhros reached out an arm to you and held you close to him, tucking your head under his chin. Sobs escaped your lips. There you knew there was nothing you could do to change his mind. There you knew it was going to be the last time you'll see him.

"There's no hope for us." He then cupped your cheeks and looked at you straight in the eyes. "But there is hope for you."

"What...?"

"You do not deserve to stay here. You can still live happily till the end of your days. Do not waste your time trying to get us out of this. You have so much more to see in this world, my friend, so much more goodness and joy."

Maedhros looked behind him and you followed his gaze. Standing by the doorway was Maglor with tear-stained cheeks. In each hand he held Elros and Elrond's hands as the twins stood beside him. Even though they were nearly reaching the age of twenty, they looked barely ten years old.

"Take them to the others," Maglor said. "The three of you do not deserve to be caught in the mess we have made."

Elrond and Elros exchanged worried looks before raising their chins to look at Maglor. They were aware of what the sons of Feanor have done but there was still love for Maglor had taken care of them as if they were his own children. They hesitated, but with one last nod from Maglor, they let go of his hands and ran to you as you stood up. Elrond took hold of the hems of your tunic while you carried Elros in your arms.

"Take them." Maedhros got on his feet and placed a hand on top of Elrond and Elros' heads before kissing your forehead.

"But..."

"I shall remember everything that you have done for us, (Y/N). Thank you for being a friend...

...even when everyone has turned their backs on us."
