TW: TOXIC RELATIONSHIP ELEMENTS AHEAD
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hange had jumped on her feet to chase after her. Nathalie had stormed out of the room the moment she had said that. She didn’t want to hear anything else coming from her Commander. She didn’t want to hear anything else coming from Levi, or Moblit, or Hange. That was her decision and it was final. Nathalie wasn’t going to let Erwin use her more than he already had. He knew. He clearly knew that what he was asking her was to die. Or at least take a step closer to death.
Who am I kidding? That was what Erwin asked of anybody. He had led countless of his comrades to certain death and now he was leading her as well. Nathalie was only reminded that the choice that she had made was the right one. Levi. Levi loved her. He loved her overwhelmingly much. A sick, mad, obsessive kind of love. But it was love and she was feeling the exact same. She would choose Levi over anybody.
Maybe Levi was right after all. She should stay in a house unharmed to look after their little brats. Maybe Nathalie was only pushing herself away from something that she was so good at. Science. Research. Fighting. But she had done nothing but endanger Levi’s life out there. If she wasn’t there, he would have been more focused. He would’ve never gotten hurt. She was only a weakness to him out there.
And now… now she just had to stay alive. She just had to stay back and be there for him. She had to do this though. She had to figure this out because deep down she knew that that was exactly what her parents had tried to achieve. That was exactly what her parents wanted to do. To cease the existence of titans without killing anyone, for the simple reason that they were both doctors, and they couldn’t kill. It was up to her, and she hated to admit but Erwin was right. That man was always right. She was going to work on that last thing and then that’s it.
She was going to back off. She couldn’t allow herself to die. Not when she knew that Levi needed her.
Nathalie heard footsteps banging on the floor behind her and a hand caught her shoulder. She turned and she saw Hange. “W- Wait, Nat, you stupid little shit…” Hange took a moment to catch her breath. She didn’t care whether they were in the midst of a hall where multiple employees and Survey Corps superiors walked all around.
Nathalie raised an eyebrow. “What is it, darling-”
“Don’t give me the ‘darling’ bullshit, come with me,” Hange growled as she grabbed her shoulder and tugged Nathalie back into an empty office nearby. Nathalie couldn’t tell whose office that was, but it was empty. Hange slammed the door shut and she pressed her back against it. “You wanna resign?! Do you think I’ll let you?!”
Nathalie sighed heavily. “I’ve no choice-”
“Yes, you do! You can stay!” Hange cried out.
“I can’t, Hange,”
“Yes, you can! Are you going to throw all these away? Our research? Our science? The fight? Are you willing to walk away from these all for him?!” Hange cried out, pointing finger at the direction that led to the Commander’s office where Levi was probably still inside.
“Yes,” Nathalie sighed in exasperation. She was angry at herself because of how easily the answer dropped from her lips. Are you willing to throw these all away for him? Yes.
Yes, she was willing to walk away from everything if it meant she’d keep him safe that way. She was only a distraction for him in the battlefield. And her research was killing her. One was endangering her life, the other was endangering his own. Things that neither she and nor Levi wanted. They both just wanted to live together once this was all over. They never asked for anything else. If she stayed in the Survey Corps, Erwin would only use her just a little bit more.
