“All done,”

Eren notified Armin and Armin gave his friend a knowing nod. Armin loaded another set of bullets into his gun, and the two friends rushed within the largest chamber with the most test subjects. Nothing really looked human in there. Some of them were in tubes, some others were locked in cages. Deformed little creatures that were going to haunt their nightmares. Eren had just finished disabling all alarms, and they both had just finished shooting the two scientists who were lingering in there as well.

It was 2 fucking am. Did those people never sleep? It infuriated Eren very damn much. But for Armin it wasn’t surprising. He knew scientists never slept, always too dedicated to their work. He had so many live examples. Hange, Nathalie, Moblit, heck even the Commander and his Captain, who weren’t scientists, but they were too dedicated to their duties. Armin admired that, but it wasn’t particularly helpful in their current situation.

“Anything worth saving?” Eren asked, turning at Armin who had been searching all around.

Armin sighed and shook his head. He remembered his Captain being very adamant about looking for test subjects no older than three years old, mostly two years old. Levi hadn’t explained anything more, but it wasn’t too hard to figure that out. Nathalie had been missing for three years. Considering she was pregnant when they took her, then it hadn’t yet showed, so, she was probably somewhere between the first and fourth month. Which meant that if she had a baby during her time into those labs, they couldn’t have possibly been more than two years old.

That was insane. Armin hoped that wasn’t true. Armin hoped that the Captain didn’t mean something like that. He just hoped that the Captain just wanted to save those kids and nothing more. Dammit. It’d be too damn cruel if something like that had happened.

Yet, Armin knew. He knew how cruel this world could be.

So he double-checked and he could have sworn, he saw something moving. Eren caught those small little, hasty footsteps too. He lifted his gun right away. “One of them is loose,” Eren said alarmingly, not sure what to expect.

Armin lifted his hand right away and urged his friend to pull his gun down. He could see it now. The small toes of a little creature peeked from beneath the lab counter that stood in the middle of the room. It was still dark in there, but there were still lights coming from the beeping machines and the tubes.

Eren lowered his target and he looked at Armin with surprise. He didn’t seem to get why Armin had urged him to put his gun down, but Eren knew Armin always had a good reason for everything he did. “What is it?” Eren asked.

Armin pressed a finger on his lips, urging Eren stay quiet. Whoever could fit beneath that counter, was small and agile and thin. And those bare toes looked like the toes of a little one, no older than two-years-old. Armin mustered his courage and he approached them, slowly, silently, cautiously. Whatever was beneath, drew back its feet right away as if it was scared. And of course, it was.

Armin dropped on one knee and he leaned down. His eyes widened. They were two. They were twins. Or at least, he guessed so. They seemed to be the same age, but one was a girl, and the other was a boy. It was still dark in that room but he could still tell a few details about them. The girl had pitch-black hair and sharp blue eyes, and the boy was the spitting image of his father. He had also had raven-black hair and his eyes were silver with tinges of blue. Both were very skinny, in dirty, ragged clothes and bruises all around their little arms and feet.

Armin’s jaw just about dropped, but he kept back his surprise right away. They looked scared and bruised and scarred. The last thing he wanted to do was scare them. Armin smiled at them both. The warmest smile he could manage as he knelt down and Eren knelt beside him. His eyes widened in surprise. The Captain was right after all. There were indeed small two-year-old test subjects. Eren couldn’t yet pick up the pieces. He’d probably have to ask Armin to explain later. But for now, both little ones were scared and trembling, and by the looks of it, they had been greatly mistreated by the scientists in this facility.
