"Do you know if my asshole of a brother is coming to visit anytime soon?" I ask her while she refills my water bottle

"Do you know if my asshole of a brother is coming to visit anytime soon?" I ask her while she refills my water bottle.

"I have no idea I'm sorry. We haven't talked recently." She finishes up with the water and moves to my bed. "Head up." She asks and I do as she says.

Fluffing my pillow to make sure I'm comfortable she pats everything and signs for me to lie back down. Then she takes the pill cocktail out of her pocket and hands it to me with the water bottle she just filled.

"You know the deal." She says as I take the pills.

These last few days we have fallen into a boring routine. I wake up and she comes to open the blinds and bring me breakfast. Then she gives me the pills and changes my bandages when necessary. I'm pretty much isolated from everything else happening in the world as Matteo has been MIA. Probably occupied finding the people who blew my leg to pieces.

I notice Mia taking her bag which means today is one of the days. She has to change the bandages. I hate these days because I can't only think of what I coward I am for not being able to look at my fucking leg.

"Want to try again today?" She asks softly.

She has been trying to help me, showing me how she removes the bandages but every time she reaches that part I can't keep watching.

"I don't think I can," I admit closing my eyes.

"It's been days now, and I know it's difficult because I have seen it before but you need to it, Carlos. It will be good for you." She tries for the hundredth time.

She means well, I know that. And she is patient too which means a lot to me but I'm not ready. I wish I was.

"I can't." I shake my head.

"Okay, don't worry. We will try again soon." She places her soft hand over my own.

Instead of taking my hand away from under hers, I welcome the reassuring feeling I didn't know I was craving. She smiles at me and there's nothing inappropriate about her gesture. It's her being her. And even if I'm not used to her warm and caring attitude yet this time I needed it.

Closing my eyes again she works around my leg gently. Removing the old bandage before cleaning and applying the new one.

"Done, I'm getting good at this. I might start to write down my times to see how fast I become." She jokes, her usual smile showing again.

"Making a game out of a poor man missing a leg?" I say with a straight face.

In reality, I don't care about her joke. I'm glad she is not acting as if I am a delicate vase that will break at any sudden movements. It's just that I love to play with her, she is so easy to break sometimes.

"I'm sorry I didn't mean to." Her smile disappears and guilt is the substitute.

"I'm just playing Mia, it's okay," I tell her not wanting to haunt her that much.
