"Store's closed," Sakura hollered over her shoulder, stacking another empty box on top of the others as she sorted through the newest inventory. Footsteps could be heard behind her and she rolled her eyes, not bothering to look up. "Didn't you hear me? I said that the store is closed. Come back tomorrow. We'll be back and open by 8."
The sound of heavy boots stopping just behind her caused her to close her eyes and sigh with irritation; yet she continued to ignore the intruder and finished with her notes, clipboard in hand.
"I'm here on unofficial business, love."
Her eyes widened, and if she hadn't been holding tightly to her pencil she would have dropped it. She slowly turned, gaze traveling up the line of his dirty jeans, further up the length of his worn, form-fitting t-shirt until she finally met his eyes.
Those deep, dark eyes. They used to make her swoon and weak at the knees, but now—
Her emerald eyes narrowed, her teeth clashed and she practically growled his name. "Sasuke Uchiha." All of the hurt, the anger, and the betrayal bubbled up inside of her, begging to spew from her lips, but she kept them tightly shut. 'Let the past be the past. You've moved on. You've bettered yourself. To spite him but regardless...you're strong and independent. You don't need to deal with his bullshit anymore.'
His head tilts, his hands resting in the pockets of his blue jeans and his mouth twitches with his signature smirk. "Hello, Sakura. It's been too long."
'Three years, seven months... but who's counting.'
She slowly rises and places her hands on her hips after depositing the clipboard on a nearby box. "Not long enough I'd say."
He chuckled at her comment, his posture relaxed as he propped himself up against one of their counters. She wanted to stomp up to him and shove him off of it, but she would appear as 'immature' or whatever.. something he'd said to her when he dumped her for another. "You always were quick witted. One of your best qualities I'd say."
Sakura rolled her eyes and frowned; her stature stiff and unwelcoming. "What do you want? I'm sure you didn't come all of this way to rehash the past with lil' ol' me, Sasuke." He shifts, standing upright and his playful expression instantly darkens.
"No. You're right. I didn't." He tilted his head slightly, glancing around the shop before meeting her stern gaze again. "Why haven't you been answering your phone?" She was taken aback by his question, but quickly recovered.
She snapped her fingers and clicked her tongue. "I don't believe that's any of your business." He huffed and took a step towards her, his left hand coming in front of him as he gestured towards her.
"It is when your family asks me personally to come and speak with you. To bring you home."
"And why in the hell would they do that? They know where I am, and they haven't even had the decency to come and see me after all of this time; after all of these years. So why would they bother with sending the likes of you, when they know good and well how I feel about you? How much I fucking despise you!"
"Because they know that I am the only one who can get you to come back home, Sak." The pink-haired huffed and turned her back on him intent on walking away from the conversation, and the uncomfortable feeling growing in her gut but his next words caused her to stop in her tracks. "Your father... he's dying."
Sakura turned to him, eyes wide and mouth slightly ajar. "What?"
He took a tentative step towards her, his expression softening. "Kizashi was diagnosed with cancer three weeks ago. They are only giving him a few months." He walked up to her, as if approaching a wild animal capable of fleeing at any moment... his hand raised. "He wants to see you, Sakura. They all do. I'm here to take you home. To be with him. It's his last dying wish."
Sakura closed her eyes tightly, her hands clenched at her sides, as her heart squeezed where sadness seeped into her bones. Her father was dying. But... she was conflicted. After everything that her 'family' had put her through, Sakura had never intended on going back. She'd told them as such when she left. But... her father had always, always been there for her. No matter what, and now— she had to be there for him. She opened her eyes slowly and met onyx orbs, nodding once. She knew what she had to do. No matter the price she had to pay.
Even if, in the end, it cost her everything.
