NM - "Ki Dekhn di aa puttar?"
(Kya Dekh Rahi hai puttar?)

S - "Nanu di yaad aa rahi si... hun tak Poore Ghar ch raula paa lena si ohna ne "
(Nanu ki yaad aa rahi thi .... abhi tak poore ghar mein shor krdena tha unhone)

NM - "Lai te, oh nai haige te koi na. Aaapa kami poori kr lene aa ohna di. Jaa tyaar hoke aa, gurudware jaana hai na paath se pehle."
(Woh nhi hai toh koi baat nhi. Hum kami poori krlenge unki.)

I smile embracing her into a quick hug before running to my room. This too had always been mine. All of us cousins had one. I pulled out the first of my bags taking out the only somewhat simple suit I'd brought for the events. I restrained on getting a makeup artist for all of my events, calling my team only a day before the wedding. They knew what I liked, and no way was I risking my skin days before my big day. I took a quick shower letting my hair air dry as I put on simple makeup along with the jewelry I'd been sent just a few minutes ago.

I could hear the chaos downstairs about everything from the camera men to people not getting ready. I moved downstairs wrapping the chunni over my head. Sidharth was ready, standing by the stairs with both Raghav and Khushal who looked much to tired to be there. I pace down the left over stairs letting my anklets jingle along with the jutti. Loud enough to make me chime, they sounded exactly like they always did when I was younger. The sound so familiar that I knew I couldn't be wrong. Of course Nani Maa remembered. I walked around the corner wrapping my arms across Sidharths torso as he continued talking to Khushal, acknowledging my hands against his chest by wrapping his own palm over them. Almost everyone around here was habitual to this, the older people either in the back for the set up or making sure the way to our local gurudwara was clear of any disturbances. He turned towards me as Baaz took the other two away. His arms instantly locked around my waist pulling me just close enough. "Red is definitely your colour baby" he whispered, the pad of his thumb softly running over the line of my bottom lip. He was enticing. Completely in control of me. The same way I was of him. He looked no less himself in the pinkish floral kurta he'd adorned. The sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, only enhancing the way his arms looked.

I couldn't help but notice his muscles stretch as I hugged him properly, walking out spotting both our moms and Nani maa. I made sure to pick up the offerings I was to take along before walking over to them. Sidharth followed, both Raghav and Khushal right behind him, suddenly excited to roam the thin bricked streets of the village. We weren't in the developed Beas. We were further down the road, exactly in the center. A complete old style village. Kids still played with rocks and bike tires, everyone was still always welcome into each other's homes, the older men still sat together under the shade of the humongous tree, discussing politics or playing cards. Whatever they decided on. Everyone also still walked from place to place, the streets being too small for even a small car. I'd specifically asked to keep the traditional paath before the wedding. I wanted each and every blessing I could have for this new start of both of us. In no way was I going to even think that marriage was easy. It wasn't. Of course we'd already lived together and seen each other grow but marriage was different. The promises, vows weren't something you give just anyone. Marriage came along with a lot of other things. Sharing things we may not have before, subsiding the anger we both had no control over, discussing every decision without becoming selfish at any point. Explained in simpler words the decisions we would make weren't only in considering ourselves. Especially financially. Investments and trips wouldn't be as often, and that was only right. We had to save up, work towards a luxurious life for the both of us and of course whenever we had kids. We had the basics down already, reason being that neither of us really ever considered each other gf/bf, neither were we just friends. It was more like a husband wife throughout. The sweet blissfully hymns completely assuring that. We walked inside putting both the offerings in front of the silver box as we kneeled down taking the blessings ourselves. The paath was going on for a day already reason being the 48 hour readings followed by Kirtan and ardaas. We sat down at the end of the hall letting the discussion part be handled by Nani maa. She was the only one who truly knew the custom. The next few hours making me as peaceful as it always does, with the added factor of what we were here for. The stolen glances being the only form of contact. We made our way back through different paths, not supposed to meet before the function tonight. I made my way along with mom towards our end of the haveli while he did the same with maa. They were getting everything ready for the roka ceremony happening even though it was something usually done a few months or years before the marriage. I sat against the decorated platform just as been told. It was subtle enough to not be over the top but still decorative enough to look pleasing. Just as I'd wanted.

I smiled letting Mom reset the way my chunni lay, putting it around my neck in a way both pretty and simple

I smiled letting Mom reset the way my chunni lay, putting it around my neck in a way both pretty and simple. Another thing I didn't know she'd ever do herself. Nani maa came moments later putting the last 2 of her gold bangles upon my wrists. I try to pull my arms away, even though I knew it wouldn't work. This was the one thing she'd made for the all of us. Working for them on her own.

NM - "Thapar lgaungi agar kuch bola toh."

I chuckle sitting back against the seat properly. Maa and both Preeti and Neetu di were coming over for the Roka, my own parents and Baaz leaving just as they arrived. I sent Maamu and Maami with them wanting them to be just as much of a part as they were in real life. I chime watching Nia walk in first taking a seat beside me as Preeti di scolded her for doing so.

S - "Hyee rabba di koi baat nhi na. Baith ne do usse. Aivayi hi daant rahe ho"

P - "Tune sach mein bohut sar Chrahya hua hai isse. Udhar Sidharth ne rehne ko bola toh Kehti hai nhi mein toh maami k pass hi jaana hai."

"Haan toh meri best friend hai na yeh? Idhar hi ayegi" I mumble taking Nia into a soft hug. I heard a few comments from everyone else around but they didn't matter. Today was the beginning to the best week of my life by hook or crook. I smiled letting the camera man capture a few pictures as all three of the women made their way behind the swing. The red phulkari embroidered chunni soon put over me, the symbol of me now being officially engaged in a sense of being accepted into the family. The platter of both gifts and fruit lay in my lap, small Mehndi dots put into my hand the next moment along with both red lipstick and a bit of sindoor as per custom. I moved upstairs moments later, stealing glances at the other side of the function. They were just starting having waited till maa got back. I could almost feel the awkwardness in his face seeing people he'd really never seen before. He'd been like that all morning, the usual confidence lost somewhere inside him. It almost made me laugh. He was the last person that needed to be worried. No one could have anything against him. He's literal perfection. I moved into my room adorning the new look. It made my stomach flutter. The sindoor, chudiyan and even the chunni. This was by far my favourite look of myself.
