Break

You watched her just sit there, closing her eyes and mumble thing to herself as she thought up a plan. You sighed, only to end up coughing up the dust. It was awful down there. Like an actual coal mine, which you were pretty sure this was. You got the hammer, swinging it over and hitting the wall. It crumbled a little, but not a lot, making you wonder how much they wanted you to dig.

You heard some metal clanging noised from beside you. You looked over and saw the doctor hitting the chains with her hammer, causing no effect on them however. You did the same, trying to break through the metal chains, however they didn't even leave a scratch.

You stopped after a while, your arms aching too much for you to be able to continue. You took some deep breaths as You put the hammer down, stretching your arms and wincing at the ashiness. Those chains weren't going anywhere. Yet you looked over to the doctor who was still hitting her chains.

"Doctor..." you paused a little, knowing that saying anything to her at the moment would annoy her "that..that chain won't go anywhere.." you mumbled quietly.

She stopped with her hammer mid air, ready to hit as she stared at her unscarred chains. You could see that her jaw was clenched in anger as she lowered the hammer. There was a long silence as she stared at the chains.

"Doctor I'm sorry" you said guiltily, looking away.

"We're stuck here!" She snapped "stuck working for those creatures and you've somehow managed to actually mess up a planet where literally nothing bad happens!" She shouted at you.

You rolled your eyes, trying not to buckle under her gaze. You lifted up the hammer, although it was awfully gainful for your fatigued arms, and started hitting the wall again.

"I'm sick of you wandering off" she said. "This is you're fault"

You clenched your teeth, trying to ignore her. You closed your eyes, as you absentmindedly took a swing at the wall. You could practically feel the angry eyes on you. She really was having a go at you. But you couldn't help but feel this wasn't the time to be arguing. Maybe later she could throw all the shade she wanted but you needed to get on with finding a way out for now.

"The amount of times I've heard shit being my fault" you muttered, picking at the crumbling wall.

"It is your fault!" She snapped.

"I KNOW!" You screamed off the top of your lungs.

You didn't intend for it to have come out that angrily but you couldn't help it at that point. You tightened your grip on the hammer as you took another hit at the wall. You tried to swallow the lump in your throat but only seemed to choke on it.

You were practically holding your breath at this point and not by choice. The tension was killing you and the fact that the doctor wasn't saying anything back, you couldn't figure out if it was a good thing or a bad thing.

"(Y/n)" you heard her say softly.

You didn't look over to her it couldn't help but be surprised at how gently she was speaking to you all of a sudden.

"I saw those scars" she simply said.

"You've seen a lot of my scars" you said coldly towards her, still refusing to look in her direction.

"I hadn't seen many of the new ones until just then when I was checking you over for injuries when you were unconscious" she said.

"Stop talking. Seriously I don't want to talk to you right now" you whispered, picking at your hammer.

You wondered how much she really did see. Although she didn't know where many of them came from, actually seeing them now made it certain she was going to be more adamant on asking you about them. And you wondered if your bruises had fully healed or if she'd seen some of those too.

You'd both basically stopped doing any work at this point and the only thing that brought you out of your thoughts were heavy footsteps coming your way. You looked over and saw one of the brown aliens heading for you both. You instantly backed away a little, afraid of his angered expression.

"You two are not doing enough work!" It shouted.

You flinched a little, unsure of what to do.

"Yes." The doctor said, averting the attention to her "why are we working down here anyways? What for? What do you want?" She asked.

It simply glared at her hardly before grabbing her rather harshly by the arm. She winced a little as she was dragged to her feet, the restraints keeping her half bent however.

"Doctor!" You shouted in worry.

"I'm fine" she said, staring at the creatures eyes.

"You two don't work efficiently when together. Separation is needed" it simply stated.

It undid some of her chains at the bottom, however keeping her arms restraint. The doctor was being pulled away from you at this point and you tried lunging forward to her, only for the metal to dig further into your skin and you to be pulled firmly back by the chains.

"Doctor!" You shouted out for her, hoping you weren't really going to be left alone in some random dark coal mine on your own while working as a slave.

You couldn't see her any further as you called out into the empty space of the tunnel. There was no reply and you started to feel more anxious by the second. You shuddered a little, taking one last look, realising that the doctor was well far away from you now.

You turned back around, your head running through a thousand thoughts of what to do now. All that time spent arguing was for nothing. It was stupid. If you'd worked together you could have been out by now. Safe on the TARDIS with Graham and Ryan and Yaz all there too.

You looked around, grabbing your hammer, knowing you had to get out of these chains. You hit them really hard, shouting a little as it hit the chains.

There was nothing. Not a single scratch. You looked around, hoping to find anything to help. But there was only one way you knew to get out of this stupid mess that the doctor herself even told you you managed to get yourself into. And now the doctor was in danger too. Anything could be happening to her right now.

You tried pulling your hands out of the shackles but knew there was no use. There was only one thing for it. One way to get free. And it was going to be painful.

You'd have to use the hammer to break your hands and get yourself out.
