Ice

You looked desperately around for the doctor, hoping to find her or at least catch a glimpse of her lilac coat or her blond hair. But she had definitely gone. Turned out you had stood still staring at that statue for a little too long, long enough for the doctor to have walked on ahead of you.

"Doctor!" You called out for her again, wishing and hoping for some response.

But nothing but the cold air that the doctor's figure was once protecting you from hit you. You gulped, staring at the empty space. But then you realised that there was a moving angel behind you. You quickly turned around and jumped in surprise and fear.

It had moved considerable closer to you now, only about ten meters away from you. It's stone hands were no longer over its eyes in a weeping position, but were down just below its face, leaving the angels eyes to look directly at you.

"Doctor!!" You shouted out for her, keeping your eyes on the angel.

Still there was no response. You cursed yourself for not sticking closer to her. Even when you planned on staying close you couldn't. It was like it was first nature for you to get yourself into trouble. Usually that would be fine but not when you had the prospect of being dropped off home. And now there was a moving statue out after you.

"DOCTOR!!!" You screamed off the top of your lungs.

Your throat physically hurt after that. You tried to keep your eyes on the angel. You didn't expect anything to happen when you absentmindedly blinked. But when your eyes opened the angel was even closer and had its arms reaching out for you.

You jumped and stepped back a little, shuffling in the snow while keeping your eyes on the terrifying statue. You had no idea what this thing was or what was going on but you didn't want that thing any closer to you. You made sure to not even let the snow that was falling stop you from staring at it.

But as you stepped back, you heard a cracking sound coming from under your feet. Your heart stopped. You knew exactly what that was. You stood completely still, not moving an inch. You looked down to see ice that was under the trail of snow you cleared with your shuffling. And it was breaking. You were on ice! On a frozen river! And it was about to break. Any sudden movements would have the ice shatter beneath you.

"DOCTOR!!" You screamed again, begging for her to answer.

You instantly remembered about the angel and looked back up. You saw that it's hands were mere inches from your face and it's face looked as though it was screaming with its mouth open and stone teeth showing. You instantly screamed at the shock of the moved statue, stumbling back some steps.

And that sudden movement was all it took for the ice to give way beneath your feet. You screamed at the sudden drop as you fell through the ice. And that in itself took all the air out of your lungs before you were even submerged in the water.

As your body hit the cold water, the breath was taken from your lungs. Your reflex was to gasp for air, not even by choice, but you only got to inhale the ice cold water into your lungs. It was like a thousand needles were stabbing you all over your body as you chocked on the water. You tried to swim back to the surface desperately but you were severely short of breath. You physically had no air to hold your breath and you were coughing and chocking on the water than engulfed you.

Your arms were fatigued as you tried to thrash at the water to get higher and closer to the surface. But working on no oxygen was difficult. And the pain of the coldness was intense. You felt helpless and wanted to scream. But you had no air in your lungs to do so. You still tried to swim to the top and started to feel incredibly lightheaded as you got closer to it.

You stretched out your arms desperately, trying to get to the surface. But all you hit was ice that had trapped you under. You must have moved away from the hole you fell through. You instantly started to panic, the dizziness from the lack of oxygen getting to your head now.

You tried to swim around a little, refusing to give in to the dizziness. You felt around with your arms to see if there was any breakage of the ice. You couldn't help but try and gasp for air, but you only got gulps of the harshly cold water.

You moved your hands around the ice above you, trying to find the hole that broke the ice. You couldn't see properly now as your eyes were starting to show stars in the corner of your eye sight. You were incredibly fatigued and every inch of your body was hurting from the cold and tiredness. Your lungs hurt and you were coughing and gasping, only for the water to keep surrounding you. Your clothes were also heavy with the amount of water they had soaked up. Your head was beyond dizzy now and you knew you could loose consciousness any second now.

You couldn't die. Not like this. Not here. You often thought about how you would die. You never thought it would have been by drowning. Only once, a very long time ago did you even come close to drowning. And now the prospect of that happening was all too real as your movements were slowly but surely coming to a halt, the lack of oxygen and the dizziness catching up to you.

You tried to move your arms around but your eyelids became heavier and heavier. Your coughing, choking and struggling eventually came to a halt.

In one last attempt to save yourself, you moved your hands along the ice above you. And you weren't sure if you were imagining it in your current oxygen deprived condition of your mind, but you thought you felt a hole in the ice above you. But that was no use now as your eyes involuntarily closed and your body lost all its strength.

But just as you thought everything was over for you, you were sure you felt someone grab your hand above you before all you felt was darkness.
