**Next chapter is the last chapter of this book... Wow... Part three should be up today or tomorrow.
Idea given to me by @NinjagoPhoenixNinja Sorry it's short! Next one is so much longer and then there's a whole other book. Well, the first chapter that is.**

Chess tournaments. You were naive enough to enter one without too much practice. Your close friend, Pavel Chekov, had been teaching you. He was entering the competition as well, as far as you knew he wasn't too good. You won almost every single game.

It seemed harmless at first, just a chess competition. All for fun, no cash rewards or anything. You ended up making it to the finals, ripping down every opponent. You knew you had won the instant Pavel sat across from you.

"Chess is a Russian sport." He stated, his thick Russian accent seeming to increase as he spoke of his homeland.

"You may be Russian, but I'm still better. I win every time." You remind him, moving your chess piece and hitting the timer. Pavel did the same and the process repeated in dead silence.

"I'm going to let you in on a secret. I let you win." Pavel told you, smirking as he moved pieces on the board. "Checkmate."

He pounded the timer gently with his fist and smirked. You stated at the board in disbelief. He's won, Pavel had won. He had always let you win to lead you on that you were actually amazing, when you weren't.

"Congrats." You murmur, doing your best to be good loser. You got up and walked out, trying to keep the tears that threatened to fall down your face slip.

"Y/N! Y/N wait!!" A Russian boy asked, running after you. You already knew it was Pavel.

"If you're here to gloat, I don't want to hear it." You tell him, crossing your arms and sighing. Pavel's expression was soft, concerned. A true friend.

"I just wanted to say that I'm sorry for tricking you like that and getting your hopes up and such. I hope I didn't ruin this." Pavel apologized, almost rambling. You smile slightly and nod, accepting the apology.

"Please, not again?" You request, being reassured with a nod.

"Now, how about another chess completion?" Pavel suggested, a grin never leaving that face. You groaned at the very thought. "Kidding kidding. Ice cream it is."

Pavel wrapped his arms around you and walked with you to go get ice cream. Who knew losing a competition could actually be good.
