Chapter 56: The Cards

Ember's POV

I'm the next target.

The Overseer wants me.

I shook my head. 

No! I refuse to die! There has to be more than this!

Jun and Nina... thank goodness they're here... we really needed them.

I needed them.

We had a friendship, but they belong in a different world.

They'll have to go home.

No, don't think about that right now.

"Hey uh..." came a voice. "Am I interrupting something?"

I whirled around to see a smaller girl with long black hair and gray eyes staring at me. A glowing orangish-red feather accessory was in her hair.

"Setsuna?" I gasped, shocked.

But then again... the author does tend to bring characters from several timelines ago here.

"How do you know my real name?" She asked, her voice full of suspicion.

"I- somebody showed me the Overseer's past and..." I trailed off.

She relaxed and nodded.

"Yeah, that's me," the girl said, her eyes full of seriousness.

"Why are you here?" I asked.

"After Adrien's death, the Overseer has tried to have multiple hosts in his lifetime," Setsuna said. "Damian, Tsuki, Akuji, Ash, Razer and Kyllian. Every time, it failed... because of you."

I froze. "Wait how?!" I asked.

"You've played a key role in all of their relationships with the Overseer," the girl said. "And let's say that... the Overseer wants you gone, but thinks you have a lot of potential."

"P-potential for what?"

She sighed and shook her head.

"He wants you to be his next host," she told me. "And he won't let anything stop him this time."

I shuddered as she took a card deck and drew a few cards.

"So the question now is..." she said, flipping the cards to show me. "What will you do?"

I stared at the cards.

The Moon.

Judgement.

The Hanged Man.

We stared at each other.

"Do you even have to ask?"
