I pull away as Hailey calms down. I gently squeeze her hand and smile softly. It always pains me to see such a young mother left alone.

"You know," I begin, "I've been doing this job for 30 years. It never gets any easier. I can support you while you're here at the hospital. I do suggest you get some rest though."

Hailey rubs her eyes and nods in reply. I give her hand one last squeeze before leaving the room. I make my way from the felivery wing to the NICU wing to check on the babies.

Javier, my better half, meets me by the NICU wing.

"Those babies are fighters," he states, "their vitals are steady. How's the mother?"

"She's a bit of a wreck," I sigh. "She's gonna get some rest. I'll have to talk to Dr. Meyer, but I think we should keep her under observation."

"Does she show signs of post partum depression?"

"A little. And she's alone which will just make things worse."

"Okay. I'll give Dr. Meyer a call. I need to talk to him about these babies. You should talk with the mother tomorrow and ask for the names."

I nod in reply and make my way back to the delivery wing. I make my rounds to my other patients.
