Chapter Sixty

The amount of days that passed since that night went by quite quickly.

I had been avoiding Elijah, for reasons that I wasn't quite sure of. He made me nervous and uncertain, which drove me absolutely insane.

Klaus was no longer aligned with Genevieve, thank god. But, at the same time, he had been making deals with the wolves. I liked the idea of him actually making alliances, but he wanted to turn them into his little werewolf army. However, it seemed that these deals had fallen out the night that Marcel tried to kill everyone with a drop of blood in their veins. In other words, they were almost no longer a part of the alliance.

I was spending more and more time with the wolves. Not only was I trying to do some damage control and try to get them more involved, but I was also wanting to keep an eye on Hayley. I felt the need to protect the child.

To be honest, I wasn't entirely sure why I was so protective of the baby. Perhaps it's because the better part of my human life was spent without a family, and was spent with the majority of the people around me either hating me or wanting to kill me. Maybe it's because I didn't want any other person to ever feel that way again.

Hayley and I walked along the river bank, and I was humming softly to the tune htat my mother sang me when Hayley spoke. And she happened to bring up the one subject that I was trying desperately to avoid.

"So..." she said. "You wanna tell me what's going on with you and Elijah?"

"Nothing's going on, Hayley," I assured her.

She rolled her eyes. "Oh, come on, ROse. You and I both know that's a lie."

I only sighed in reply.

"The way that he looks at you..." she paused. "I've never seen anything like it. Wherever you go, he goes."

"He's not here now," I said.

"Yeah. And how many times in the past month have you not been with him?"

Well... She had a point.

"Whatever you say, he almost always agrees with. And whatever hurts you... He destroys. We saw that a few nights ago, remember?"

"Okay, I really do appreciate what he did, but if he wanted to destroy what hurt me, he would have killed Diego," I told her.

"He didn't kill Diego because he knows that some part of you still cares about him," she said. "That's what I'm talking about, Rose! He doesn't want you to feel even the slightest amount of pain. He cares about you. A lot. You seriously expect me to believe that you don't feel anything for each other?"

I bit my lip, then decided to explain. "Elijah and I, we have an... Understanding."

She gestured with her hand for me to continue.

"I never question his actions because I trust him. I listen to him if he's ever angry or upset, because he's just like me. He hides his true emotions to try and help those around him because he wants to protect them. I don't ask why he wears suits or is so clean and so noble all the time because that's just a part of who he is. I don't ask him why he has stayed fighting to keep his broken family together for so long, because I have been around them for almost as long as he has," I told her, biting my lip again for a second and looking over at the river. "I just understand him in a way that others can't."
