Chapter Eighty-One

"Rose, you need to sleep," Hayley said from the doorway.

"No. Sleep takes up time," I muttered.

"You've been up since nine in the morning of yesterday, Rose! It's nine o'clock at night," she told me. "You've been awake for more than 36 hours. You may need to rest as much as a human, but you still need to sleep."

"Enough!" I shouted, slamming the spellbook down onto the desk. I saw her jump out of the corner of my eye, and I shook my head, wiping at my eyes. "I'm sorry, Hayley. I just..."

"I know," she said, nodding. I could see that she wasn't offended, she understood why I was irritated. "You're exhausted. You need rest."

I shook my head. "I'll rest when we find Elijah."

"Please..." she said. "Just have a nap, at least. Then we can go find Klaus and find Elijah together," she tried to reason with me.

I shook my head. "No, I-" My eyes widened when I felt it. It was him. "The cemetery... The spell is lifted, he's in one of the tombs."

"Rose, you really shouldn't-"

Her words faded as I left the abattoir, and raced to the cemetery as quickly as I could. I reached the tomb that I was sure he was in, only to be met with Nik standing right beside me and looking at me in surprise. Then he nodded to me, and we both rushed into the structure.

"There he is!" I said as soon as we came in through the door.

Elijah was down on his knees, his head hung down. He was unconscious, and limp. He had chains around his wrists, which were holding him up. I wondered why he hadn't broken them, but then I saw the doll that was hanging above his head. It was linked to the chains. He couldn't pull them out of the wall or off of his wrists unless the doll was broken.

"The doll," I said to Klaus. "Break it."

He quickly did, ripping it apart and then yanking the chains out of the walls.

Elijah fell forwards, and I caught him. I cradled his limp body in my arms, then put my hand against his cheek. "Elijah... Elijah, wake up," I said, feeling the fear immediately creep inside me when he showed no signs of response.

"He won't wake," I heard that sickeningly familiar voice from behind us. "Not yet. Which gives you and I one last chance to discuss my offer."

I saw the anger and frustration flash in Klaus' eyes. "You promised me ELijah's safe return," he growled, taking a step forwards to stand near Esther. "What, was that a lie? Just like that ghoulish atrocity outside claiming to be my father back from the dead?" he asked.

I looked at him with confusion, and he pursed his lips, then nodded to me. That was likely his way of telling me that he would explain later on.

I laid Elijah down gently, then broke the cuffs off of his wrists. I bit my lip, then took his limp hand in mine and held it tightly as Esther spoke.

"Your father's return is real. I pulled him from the Other Side before it collapsed, left him in the Bayou to join the wolves. And, I used the execution of one of his own to draw him here, where I knew he'd find you," Esther said.

"To what end?!" He shouted. "Besides my torment?"

"I brought him here to be the father you never had," Esther tried to explain. "To teach you to be the man you always longed to be. Once you are remade as a werewolf, you can join him."
