I didn't get the job. :/ They basically told me I wasn't good enough.

Oh well.

Chapter One Hundred & One

"This witch hoop," Freya said, smiling down at the small object. "It's Danish. Is this from when you lived all in Copenhagen in the 1500s?" she asked.

"Quite the eye!" Klaus grinned.

"Forgive me, Freya," I said, frowning. "But we are a bit under pressure at the moment. Perhaps we need to share what we know about this psychotic aunt of yours."

Klaus sighed, then nodded. "I did ask you here in the hopes that you would share some of Dahlia's secrets," he told her. "So, without further ado, let's get to it!"

All four of us walked to our seats at the table. Klaus sat at the head, while Freya sat across from me. Elijah didn't sit down, he stayed standing with his hand on the back of my chair. He seemed nervous around this girl. I knew that he still didn't quite trust her, but he wanted to. He just wasn't quite sure of what to say around her yet.

Freya cleared her throat, then started what I suspected to be a long, long list of reasons why we should stay as far away from Dahlia as possible. "The first thing you should know is that Dahlia is the most powerful witch I've ever seen. She craves more power still. Right now she is like me, limited to one year of life in a century. But, she wants to be free of that restriction. To gain true immortality. And that is why she will come here, drawn by your daughter to take the child's power for herself. And she would kill anyone who would defy her."

"And yet, you would defy her?" Elijah asked, finally taking his seat.

"I don't have a choice," Freya said in an attempt to defend her apparent betrayal of her aunt. "She will never let me be free. My one chance is to align with you and kill her."

Elijah seemed troubled by this, but Klaus wasn't at all convinced. He didn't trust her at all. But he wasn't going to tell her that.

"Well, now that we're all suitably motivated, let's talk specifics!" he exclaimed, smiling.

Freya took a deep breath. "For you to understand, I need to start from the beginning," she licked her lips, then began. Her voice shook at some parts, and I knew that this was difficult for her to tell us. "After taking me from my family, Dahlia used me to forge a new brand of connective magic, one that augmented my power even as it allowed her to draw from me. Once we were bonded, Dahlia became unstoppable. She wasted no time proving her might. The chief of a nearby village threatened to run us off, accusing Dahlia of witchcraft. She decided to make an example out of the entire encampment... Men, women, children. She killed them all with a wave of her hand. That was my first inkling of the power Dahlia had. Over the course of a thousand years, she's only grown stronger. And she will bring all her power to bear against you when she comes for your child," she said, looking straight at Klaus as she said the last sentence.

Klaus still wasn't convinced, while Elijah just seemed even more nervous than he did before. His phone rang in his pocket, and he pulled it out. He looked at the contact, then glanced at me with a worried expression. "Excuse me," he said, then walked out of the room. I listened in on the conversation, concerned for my friend.

"Rebekah, how are you feeling?" Elijah asked.

"As if I walked straight into a brick wall," she said from the other end of the line. "Any luck with Freya?"
