chapter 20

At noon, Christian says goodbye because he's going to bed. I also get ready for bed and go to bed, but somehow I cannot fall asleep. Sighing, I turn on my light again and take my mobile phone in my hand. "Are you still awake?" I write to Ondre. His answer comes shortly afterwards. "Sure. Are you okay?" "Can we talk on the phone? Need someone to talk" two seconds later my cell phone rings and Ondre calls me on FaceTime.

"Hey. I hope I'm not interrupting anything." I have to smile when I see him. "Hey, no, no problem. Everything okay? You look exhausted" he looks at me worried. "I'm without make-up, but thanks" "no, I didn't mean it like that" I have to laugh "I know. It's been a busy day today" I sigh. "Didn't your grandparents come to visit today?" I nod. "It was nice to see them again, but my mother is screwing everything up" "what has she done?" "Well, she's tried to shut out every conversation about me and kept bringing up my brother" "wow, didn't your grandparents say anything about that?" "I left eventually because it was getting to be too much for me, so I don't know" "don't let her get to you, Abby" I sigh because I think it's sweet the way he builds me up. "It's hard. Simon's with my dad and that's why I'm the only one bothering her right now. I can't take it much longer, I've hardly got the strength left to resist" I notice that a tear runs down my cheek. "So go, Abby. Nobody's forcing you to stay home if all you do is wreck yourself there" "I want to get out of here, but she won't let me go. She'll try to run my life like she always does. This morning she told me how to dress and do my hair. And at dinner she told my grandparents I was going to stay here and go to college..." "I'm sorry about that, Abby. I wish there was something I could do to help. But you got to get out of this, you're destroying yourself inside, it's not going to work out." I sighed. "I know. I'm gonna move out..." "to LA?" I see hope in Ondre's eyes. "I think I'll talk to my father first. If he'll take me in, I'll stay here." Ondre seems disappointed. "If he says no, I'll move to L.A." Ondre nods. We change the subject and he tells me about his day before I hang up and fall asleep a little more calmly    

The next day I try to avoid my mother as best I can. I am tired and do not have the strength to bear it with her. Since she is away with some people in the morning as usual, it is fortunately not so difficult. When I'm cleaning my room at noon, I find the letter Addison gave me for Sheri. Without further ado I decide to pay Monty and Sheri a visit.

"Abby, well, that's nice. Long time no see" Sheri immediately pulls me into a hug when she opens the door. Monty also welcomes me with a hug. "Hello! I just wanted to drop this off. Addison gave it to me" I give them the letter. "Oh, yeah, she mentioned that. We're just having coffee. You want some?" Sheri smiles at me. "I'd love to." I smile back at her and the next thing I know I'm sitting at the table with them. After they ask me a little bit about Chile, we just sit there and talk.

"I have seen that you do TikTok now too" Sheri smiles at me. " What does it mean to do, I shoot videos from time to time, but I enjoy it" I shrug my shoulders. "Yeah, it's really fun! Shall we shoot one together?" I laugh. "Sure! I'm always up for that sort of thing" I do two videos with Sheri.

When Addison's brothers Lucas and Enzo come home, I get up to leave. "Why don't you stay? You're not interrupting" Sheri smiles at me. "All right" I sit back down. "What are you planning to do now that you're back?" I sigh. "Everyone's been asking me that lately. If it were up to my mother, I'd go to college" "but what do you want?" "Get away from my mother! The best thing is to move in with my father... and just make some money somehow" "sounds good to me." Sheri's trying to cheer me up. "Well, Dad hasn't called yet... maybe he'll say no" I shrug my shoulders. "I'm sure he won't And if...you're welcome to stay with us anytime and can stay as long as you like" I sigh and then give Sheri a hug. "Thanks for having you and for being there for me" "it's no problem"
