My roller blades clatter onto the cement floors. I drop onto the hard bench and sigh. Roller blading is always a blast, which is why I agreed to come, but I never understand how to put them on correctly.

"Hey there," Jacob chimes, sliding next to me. I smile, glad I have an expert. He's holding a pair of blue roller blades with wheels worn from experience in the rink.

"Hey," I motion toward the blades, still in a heap on the floor, "Any tips?"

He rolls his eyes jokingly, "I didn't know I invited a novice."

"You should have known what you signed up for," I elbow him.

"Baseball player? Hmmm, yeah baseball players don't play on ice, so it's not like they're used to sliding around."

I glare at him, jokingly, "Whatever."

He grabs the blades and unties them so that there is enough room to slip my foot in, "Cinderella," He holds it steady while I slip my foot in. We repeat the process once more.

I start attempting to tie the roller blades, but Jacob leans over and ties them for me.

"You're all set," He smiles widely, "Let me just put mine on."

I watch as he carefully puts on his roller blades. When he finishes, I quickly attempt to stand, but it results in me almost eating it. Jacob grabs my arm firmly.

"Easy there," I stand steadier, "Hey, hey, I got you."

I begin rolling over toward the entrance to the rink carefully. Jacob's arm steadies me.

"Thank you," I smile weakly at Jacob, "I completely, utterly suck. I know."

"You're fine," He steps into the rink slowly, moving backwards, "Just follow my directions."

;

Fifteen minutes later, I'm skating around a little easier. Jacob skates ahead of me, occasionally dropping back to chat with me.

"Hey," He calls back to me, skating backwards, "You're getting the hang of it. Not too bad," He pauses, "For a baseball player."

"Baseball player?" I ask, rolling my eyes, "Please."

He laughs, but suddenly, I'm falling. Screaming, I try to grab the wall. Instead, Jacob catches me.

I gasp, face to face with him.

"You okay?" He asks quietly.

"Yeah. I . . . thanks for y'know?"

"Of course," He smiles. We pause for a moment. The background noise and chatter slowly fade into the distance.

Slowly, I find myself leaning in. He wraps his arms around me, pulling me closer. Our lips touch gently. His lips are soft. It seems like time stops for a moment.

Pulling away, I face Jacob.

"Not too bad," He pauses again, "For a baseball player."

Quietly, we both laugh.
