scampering behind another bush, sugawara held his gun up in self-defense. he was down to his last few bullets, and he was determined to find the next rest stop before his gun goes dry.

why was he sneaking around like that, you ask? no, his was not a wanted fugitive by the authorities. japan had fallen under the hands of the walking dead in one day. it has been a few weeks since then, and most civilians had been bitten and turned into one of these brainless eating machines.

slowly, he peeked his head out from behind his hiding spot to make sure the coast was clear before moving again. his sharp hazel eyes caught sight of a girl, just a few meters away, with a zombie behind her.

positioning his gun at the right angle, his index finger pulled the trigger, firing a bullet, hurtling straight at the zombie's skull. startled, the girl turned around to see the zombie drop dead onto the ground before her feet. she looked around to find the person who shot it and spotted a flash of silver above a bush a few meters away, with a small silver gun in hand.

"a-are you human?" she asked, pointing her sleek black firearm at him for extra insurance.

"full-blooded human," sugawara assured her as he stood straight up.

she gave a curt nod and set her gun down, "thank you for helping me back there."

"you're welcome," he responded as he walked towards her while studying her features, "i'm sugawara koushi."

"kimberly," she answered, pushing her glasses up with her finger, like how anime characters do.

"is it okay if i tag along with you?" he asked.

she nodded, then pulled a gps out of her jean pocket and looking at her coordinates on the screen.

"we're not far from an abandoned factory," she informed him, "just a few more meters to go."

she shoved the device back into her pocket and the two began to walk.

they stepped into the place which kimberly had read off her gps system as sugawara mimed apologies for their intrusion in japanese.

"so you're japanese," kimberly stated as they clambered up a stairwell to the second floor.

"and you're not?" he asked.

she shook her head, "i'm chinese."

"why are you here in japan, then?" he asked.

they walked along a corridor.

"my mom got a transfer job here for the time being," she answered.

"and where is she?"

he opened a door to a room.

"...she was attacked."

"i'm sorry to hear that."

she said nothing as they placed their bags down in the middle of the rather bare room.

"let's scour around for restock materials," she said.

they opened cupboards and cabinets. they managed to get ahold of some canned food, rice in half-empty sacks, and some bullets. using the fuel that they had also found, they lit a fire and began to cook their dinner. they did not manage to find any pillows or blankets, so they had to make do with using their bags as pillows. they settled down wordlessly to sleep, backs facing each other.

halfway through the night, the cold wind began to kick in and blow. the cold drought woke kimberly up, causing her to slip on a jacket from her bag. however, that only warmed her up to a certain extent.

"sugawara? are you awake?" she whispered.

the male in question stirred. he turned his body around to face her.

"yeah, i am now," he answered.

"s-sorry for waking you up," she said.

"it's fine," he said, "is everything okay?"

"don't you find it cold?" she asked.

he hummed in agreement.

after a brief pause, he said, "i have a solution. but i don't think you're going to like it."

"what is it?" she asked.

his cheeks flushed bright red as he stammered, "w-we could... c-cuddle."

her eyes bulged. sure, he was good-looking and all, but wasn't he going too far with this?

"i-if you don't want to, that's totally fine!" he exclaimed.

her cheeks turned pink as she shifted closer towards him. she hid her face in the crook of his neck. slowly, he brought his arms up to wrap them around her.

as the two closed their eyes while the stars glittered in the night sky, one thing was certain.

their universe was only beginning to form.
