"as for your seat..." mr hasekawa said, scanning his eyes among the crowd of children, before alighting his eyes on a vacant seat, "you can sit beside sugawara-kun."

he pointed to the seat next to the boy in question, and kimberly nodded in response. she made her way down the aisle and straight to the desk.

upon sitting down, she took her pencil case out, then her pen, and wrote something in her notebook before prodding the silver-haired male gently with a small smile.

he gave a little grin before taking the notebook and scanning the text.

may i know your name?

he took the pen from her and wrote his response before handing the notebook back to her.

i'm sugawara koushi. i hope we can have a great year ahead together!

she gave him a smile and nodded.

it seemed as though it was only sugawara who was friends with kimberly. the rest of the class didn't seem to take liking to the new girl, with the girls gossiping about her especially in front of her face, taking advantage of her disability, and the boys pulling pranks on her. and whenever she asked them questions in her notebook, the children wrote mean responses.

sugawara didn't know about the bullying. kimberly never told him, neither did she want to. she didn't want to bother him with her petty problems.

it was only when he looked at the notebook which was for communication purposes that he saw them. the mean words, the hurtful insults.

why don't you just die?
dumbass.
why do you even bother living?

and her responses?

i'm sorry.
i'm sorry.
i'm sorry.

apologies. not one of them defending herself.

he frowned. how did she manage to tolerate any of this?

he penned down his message and passed the notebook to her.

why didn't you tell me you were getting bullied?

she scribbled her response down.

one or two insults don't hurt.

he wrote his new message down.

if things get worse, tell me. okay?

she gave him a smile and nodded as she gave him an "okay" sign.

however, she never kept her promise.
