walking together in silence, they headed towards the segment of the sheltered walkway that faced a post box just opposite the road that separated them. kageyama had migrated to [insert country] to study as well as stay close in touch with qq. he was going to post a letter to his parents back in japan, and qq had decided to tag along.

"kuso, i forgot my own umbrella," he cursed as he dug through his backpack.

"i have mine," she said, retrieving her small foldable dark blue umbrella, "gimme your letter. i'll post it for you."

he handed her the sealed envelope and she opened her umbrella. she had began sauntering down the street when the slamming of brakes reverberated throughout the cool air. his eyes widened.

a car collided into her, sending her flying over the windscreen of the vehicle and then back onto the ground. blood was visible on the car as well as her body and on the ground. the envelope lay beside her as rain fell in steady curtains, separating them from the rest of the world.

she was there for a moment, and her life was taken in a flash. life was unpredictable like that.

he rushed forward, rain and blood be damned, and picked her up in his arms.

"o-oi! don't you dare die on me!" he yelled as he held her close to him, "someone call the ambulance!"

as one or two of the crowd of passers-by began dialing for the ambulance, she cracked her eyes open a little and then closed them again, inhaling his scent for what could be the last time.

"you're going to be okay, you're not going to die," he whispered, a hand pressed against her head, "not on my watch."

mustering the last ounce of strength she had left, she wrapped her arms around him and muttered, "i feel my spirit passing."

"take that back, boke! you're going to be okay!" kageyama yelled, unable to contain himself any more.

he was not ready to let her go. no. not yet. not today.

qq smiled sadly as she whispered, "ai... aishiteru... tobio-chan."

her eyes fluttered shut and her hand dropped to her sides.

letting his voice cry out into the sky, tears fell from his eyes, getting mixed with the rain.

the important line (which he thought) in the letter he wanted to send to his parents was, "i'm going to propose to qq next month."

he should have been the one to post that letter. he should not have let her done it. he should have been the one getting hit, not her.

he began to imagine the infinite number of universes out there, those that involved him delivering the letter. in one, he would have gotten hit and died in her stead. in another, he would have avoided that car.

however, the heavens made this universe, the one he was in now, come true.

and this moment in this universe was never going to change.
