SCREAMS FILLED the streets. rosaline stared blankly as her mother wept at the small, frail corpse of her ten-year-old brother. grief was all she could feel at the moment. her feet were glued to the ground as she dropped her backpack full of necessities she had to escape with.

not again, she thought to herself desperately.

a looter had just put a bullet through his chest. blood roared in rosaline's ears as she stared at the scene before her, her vision starting to grow dark before the nudge of an animal's muzzle brought her back to reality. no not reality - the nightmare.

ever since the news began to reach people that the dead people started to walk, everyone panicked and started to gather all their belongings to ride out of town straight to atlanta to escape those things. although, that's what they thought would let them escape. her breath hitching, rosaline looked at her canine companion with a sadness stricken stare.

"nathan!" her mother screamed between her mournful cries. people didn't even dare stop to help. not that they could. chaos had erupted and everyone was just focusing on getting their families to safety.

"mom, we have to go!" rosaline tried to convince her, tears spilling out of her eyes. her mother swiveled around between her choked sobs and shook her head refusing to move from the spot. the girl squealed in panic and her eyes darted around the street.

the grimes house.

lori was the closest she still had to family. most of her family had lost contact with her parents - or what was left of them back in spain. her father was gone - not something that was mentioned at the dinner table often. kneeling down to eye-level with the dark creature beside her, rosaline whispered, "rhaegar, please go get lori."

with a small bark, the german shepherd set off in the opposite direction and scratched on the neighbor's door whilst rosaline attempted to pull her grieving mother off her deceased little brother. whilst she was doing this, her tears started to blur her vision and she couldn't even wipe them away as her hands were kept busy.

however, soon she had been pulled away as she didn't realize what had happened. a man, lifted her and dragged her off from the two. nathan, who she once knew to be the small joyful little boy she called her brother, had turned into one of them and sank his teeth into her mother.

screeching in sorrow, rosaline struggled against the man.

"carl, grab her things we need to go!" the familiar voice of lori commanded carl and the young boy nodded pulling the slightly heavy backpack on his back and running away, "shane get her to the car."

shane.

her husband's best friend. rosaline had heard about him plenty of times considering she had heard that rick was in hospital suffering from a gunshot wound. rhaegar's barking could be heard in the background as he hopped into the truck that shane had pulled in front of the house.

grunting as they reached the car door, shane placed the girl down in the backseat and got into the driver seat pulling away. carl placed all the bags beside him and watched the crying girl. rhaegar whined slightly, placing his head on her lap.

"rosaline, sweetie, it'll be okay." lori comforted as she turned around in the front seat with sympathy in her tone.

the girl looked up and took a deep breath. her family had just been completely wiped out but she had to be strong. to survive - the world was becoming a place that she couldn't be weak in.

nodding, she turned to carl who attempted to give her a reassuring smile whilst extending his arms. rhaegar shifted away and let the two come into an embrace.

carl murmured something against her back sadly, "i know how you feel. i lost my dad today."

rosaline flinched, looking out from the corner of her eye to meet lori's gaze which then directed to shane who turned the other way, keeping his eyes glued on the road before them, gripping the steering wheel tightly.

this was a conversation to be held at another time.

hey everyone! this is a rewrite of a story i used to have published, most of the starter chapters will remain the same but have some minor things changed about them as well as corrected grammar.

i wanted to expand rosaline's character properly and i wrote this story back in 2019, meaning that i will have no memory of what rosa's character was meant to be like but i want to see her as someone i would write in the present day. so here we go.

i hope you enjoy it. i made this chapter fairly recently, so most of it stayed the same.
