"[Y/N]?" Mia called from the kitchen, causing me to stir from my nap on the couch. "There you are — I wondered what you decided to do."

"Miranda's been in her lab all night," I grumbled and rubbed the sleep from my eyes. "I'm worried about her."

"Well, I finished breakfast if you want to bring her a plate and check on her?"

"And have her yell at me again?! No thanks," I frowned and stood up, trying to ignore the memory of Miranda kicking me out of her lab. "You can check on her — but I'm not going near her until she apologizes. Even if I am concerned..."

"What happened?"

"If you really want to know, go ask her... I just want to forget last night."

"...Sweetheart," Mia whispered and wrapped her arms around my waist, placing a kiss on the back of my neck. "Do you want to eat alone?"

"I want you to eat with me," I whispered, placing my hands over hers. "But I know you usually eat in the lab with Miranda when she's down there."

"Only when you join — I'd never make you eat alone, sweetie."

"I know, but you also help her, so if she needs help... You're the only one that can help her."

"Baby..." Mia sighed before placing another kiss on the back of my neck. "I'll stay with you unless she needs me, okay? She'd come and get me-."

"No!" I growled and glared at the food she made. "You might as well just join her — I don't want to be around her..."

Mia hesitated before she released me, allowing me to grab a plate and put some pancakes on my plate. After I finished making my plate, I grabbed a glass and filled it with orange juice before moving to the table, taking a seat as Mia started making plates for herself and Miranda. Before she left, she placed a quick kiss on my cheek, making me send her a brief smile.

'Miranda...' I thought with a frown, cutting up my pancakes. 'You have no idea — I do know what it's like to lose a child.' My heart ached at the memory, making me stab my pancake with my fork. 'That kid... I promised to protect them — but they died anyway.'

"Birdy!" The ten-year-old called as they left the cave they slept in. "Birdy?"

I flapped my wings before I flew down to them, landing at their feet and chirping.

"Hunt."

'I did promise to teach them how to hunt,' I flapped my wings and flew into the shadows of the forest — quickly changing into a human form. "This way!"

Their footsteps raced toward me as I continued walking to a clearing, telling them to go find good enough sticks for arrows. 'It's almost the fifth anniversary of when I found them,' I smiled after them when they ran off before frowning. 'I should get them new clothes — I still don't know how they came back when I brought them to the city... Did the people that abandoned them find them and bring them back?'

Howling filled the air — my heart dropped to my stomach at the sound, causing me to quickly stand and rush in the direction of the child. 'Please be okay,' Tears stung my eyes as a pained scream filled the air. 'NO!'

"[Y/N]?" Mia's voice brought me out of that horrible memory. "What's wrong?"

"I need to leave," I muttered and quickly stood up, making my way passed her.

"Wait-! Miranda wants-!"

I slammed the front door once I left, letting my wings out and taking off, deciding to fly around and clear my head. 'I got kicked out of Elara for deciding to take care of that kid,' Once I landed near the cave they used to stay in, I began to sob. 'Everything. I lost everything — yet she didn't even bother letting me speak. She would've known the truth.'

Last Night

"Mira," I called as I walked down the last few stairs. "How long have you been down here?"

"I couldn't sleep," She muttered, her face buried in what seemed to be paperwork regarding Eva's health.

"Miranda, you've looked over those results countless times — they're going to keep saying how healthy she is."

"You wouldn't understand..."

"...What's that supposed to mean?"

"It means; You wouldn't understand what it's like to lose your child! You're not a parent — how could you?!"

A memory of the five-year-old I found so many years ago flashed in my mind, making me frown. "Miranda-."

"If you're not going to help; get out," She growled and glared at me over her shoulder. "You don't know that pain — to have everything you ever wanted and then one day it's all gone. I don't want that to happen again. So, if you're not going to help me — which I doubt you will because you've never worked in a lab before — then just turn around and leave. Stop distracting me from making sure my daughter doesn't die again."

"...Fuck you, Miranda," I choked out, ignoring how she tensed and glanced back at me. "Work yourself to death then — see if I give two shits."

Present

"Little bird!?" Miranda's voice echoed off the tree, bringing me out of the memory of last night.

"[Y/N]?!" Mia's voice echoed a minute later, making me pull my knees to my chest.

'Little bird,' I scoffed internally. 'The nickname she gave me when I begged her to not call me 'Birdy' because it reminded me of them. She never pried — if she had, she would've known to never say what she did to me.'

"...Baby, please come back! I-I'm sorry! I shouldn't have lashed out — you were just worried about me..."

I watched as they crossed the treeline and froze in shock, clearly not expecting me to be here. Miranda rushed over before kneeling, hesitantly wrapping her arms around me. Mia slowly joined her next to me, wiping a tear off of my face.

When Miranda pulled back, she brought her hands up to cup my face, tears falling from her eyes. 'Was she worried I wouldn't come back?' I grabbed her shirt and pulled her in for a kiss, my heart aching when she whimpered before returning it. 'No, she was terrified I wouldn't.'

"I'm sorry," Miranda whimpered between kisses. "I'll do anything — just please give me another chance. Don't... Don't leave us because of me. We all need you — Eva needs you."

"Mira," I whispered and broke away from her desperate kisses. "Calm down. I'm not leaving..."

"Then why'd you leave? Why'd you come here?"

"...To remember the child I lost."
