With heavy feet, (y/n) excited the school building, heading home after a long tough day at school. She felt a little numb and tired, but also happy at the same time. Just a few more weeks before her final exams start and she can finally leave this school. She looked forward to going to college and eventually getting her own life and job. It's all she ever wanted.

Once at home, she opened the door and called out for her father, but figured out he was probably still at work. She shut the door closed with her foot and headed towards her room, changing her clothing and sat down behind her desk to start making her home work. The moment her pen suspended above the blank sheet of paper, her phone went off.

Dad: I hope you have had a good day at school. There's some food in the microwave, we won't be back till tonight.

It didn't really come as a big surprise to (y/n), scrolling back through her history, same looking text messages could be found. She sent a quick reply back and laid her phone upside down on the desk, doing her homework. She was more than happy to be on her own, relax and not worry about other kids or screwing things up. If there's something she hates about herself then it's her shyness, despite her parents telling her differently. Her mom always said she was special but (y/n) never considered herself special, on the contrary, she felt more like a misfit and nerd. Why her mom kept telling her was a mystery for the young girl, but she guessed it's something all moms say to make her kid feel better.

Around the afternoon, she headed down, made herself some food and sat down on the couch, turning on the TV with her old cat (c/n) next to her, trying to steal some food in the meantime. (y/n) gave her companion some meat and turned back towards the TV. It didn't take long before she felt unsafe and uncomfortable. She never felt this before, and looked at her dog that had been laying in front of the fireplace. He was staring at something (y/n) couldn't see and as far she was concerned, he had heard something outside. 'Maybe a squirrel or something' (y/n) told herself and kept looking at the TV when her dog laid back down.

As time passed, (D/n) got up and started growling, standing right in front of the backyard door. Even her cat jumped off the couch and hid with his coat fluffed up underneath a drawer. Frightened at this point, (y/n) slowly placed her plate beside her, staring at the backdoor as well. (d/n) is a very well trained dog, they got (d/n) for (y/n) because she was home alone so many times and her parents felt better with a guard dog.

The growling stopped but (y/n) still wasn't able to relax. She spotted a shadow moving in the backyard. A tall man, she knew it was a man. With her heart racing she sprinted upstairs, slammed the door closed, locked it and hid underneath her bed. She clutched onto a pillow that had been laying there, like her life depended on it and waited. She scowled at herself for leaving her phone behind downstairs, but didn't want to go back either. Seconds turned into minutes and minutes turned into hours. To her relief, she heard her parents coming home and finally she was able to breathe again.

She ran downstairs. "Mom! Dad! There was a man in the backyard!"
Completely upset, she hugged her parents, her body still shivering from fear and shock. "Are you sure it was a man?" her father asked. (y/n) nodded, and anxiously watched her father head outside, only to return ten minutes later. "There's nothing outside. Don't worry, (y/n)... it was probably nothing," he said. Although her father seemed to be sure, her mom wasn't. "Maybe we should call the cops," her mother suggested. "There's nothing outside, honey. No footprints, no tire marks, no nothing," her father stated as he looked outside again.

(y/n) brows crept together in confusion. She had spotted someone right behind the window. She saw the shadow through the curtains. Maybe she was just overreacting, maybe it was just a neighbor, but if it was, what was her neighbor doing in the backyard? Many questions flew through her mind and she couldn't sleep. All night, she kept listening to what was going on outside while clutching onto her dog. Normally he sleeps downstairs, particularly this night, she wanted her dog close to her. It made her feel safe and secure.

The next morning, she didn't want her parents to leave, but they assured her everything was going to be alright. (y/n) wasn't sure about it at all and felt anxious. She left for school and returned around 4 PM. Like every other day, she did her homework and settled on the couch that night again. Little aware of someone watching her from the shadows. She felt it, but then again, her father told her she was safe as long as she didn't open the door. When the sun started to set, the sky was filled with clouds. Thick stormy clouds and it made the sky even darker.

She slid off the couch and walked over to the window to shut the curtains and blinds. She peered into the backyard before she was able to do so and spotted two emerald green eyes staring straight at her. She froze in fear, not able to respond or move at all. It felt like her body shut down. As fast as she hit, it also disappeared but she remained frozen before she shut the blinds and did a route through the house, checking if all the doors and windows were locked. With shaky and sweaty hands, she dialed the number of her father. "(y/n), what's going on?" he asked. "There's someone in the backyard! Dad! I am not overreacting. This person is back!" she said frantically and jumped off the couch. Her father sighed, (y/n), there's no one around really. If you feel safer you call the cops and let them have a look around, but I can assure you, everything is alright," he stated. (D/n) is there too to protect you."

A silence fell while (y/n) started to proceed with what her father just told her. "Alright..." she sighed. She settled back on the couch, still not feeling safe but trusted her father's judgement. Perhaps it had been an animal, but what kind of animal has glowing, emerald green eyes?

She waited for her parents before she went to bed. Again, her dog started growling, standing right in front of the backdoor. She bit her lip and tried to ignore the anxious feeling that started to spread through her body again. She watched her dog's strange behavior before he laid down. She sucked in a breath and got up, heading for her room to take a shower. As she came in she took note of the open window. The wind was making her curtains blow in the chilly breeze and it was completely dark.

Quickly, she marched over to the window and shut it but before she did, she looked down. It's impossible for someone to come in. It would take a lot of effort to climb all the way up. Thunder struck again as she locked the door and all the power went out. (y/n) grunted and turned around, reaching in the dark to search for her phone she left on her desk when she got in. With just the flashlight of her phone, she headed down stairs, towards the basement.

At this point, (y/n) started to feel even more anxious. She felt like being in a horror movie. It wouldn't be the first time some sick killer stalks and tries to kill someone. In fact, it had been on the news not even a month ago. Cautiously, she opened the door and peeked inside, everything clear as far as she was concerned. (y/n) took a deep shaky breath before she headed down and tried not to miss a stair from nerves and fright.

Once down, she laid her phone next to her and opened the metal box that held all the wires. Before she was able to switch on the light again, she heard her dog upstairs. She wasn't too sure what was going on and turned her. It sounded like a whine or cry, something her dog had never produced before. Forgetting about the light, she ran back upstairs to have a look and make sure her dog was alright. Bursting in, it was so dark she fell over a chair and collapsed on the ground, hitting her head against the table.
