This is a bit different from my usual writing, but I was listening to

- Love Song (for the apocalypse) by Ira Wolf

- Apocalypse by Cigarettes After Sex.

- World Caves in (not the tiktok version)

And it inspired this little thing, so I hope you enjoy it!! i recommend listening to the songs before reading to enhance your experience ;)

"Wow, it's still here after everything that's happened," you marveled, taking in the sight of the familiar flower-filled meadow.

"Me neither. I really thought we'd show up just to find another wasteland," your boyfriend remarked, letting the picnic basket he held softly touch the lush grass.

It had been over three years since the world ended, but not for the two of you. It all started with foreign tensions escalating to atomic war, leading to disease, government collapse, anarchy, and wiping out most of the population, leaving behind only you, your boyfriend, and the thousands of brain-dead mutants and zombies that now plagued the land.
Together, you set up your ragged blanket on the ground, taking a seat beside each other. Looking at the basket, you couldn't help but rub your hands together anxiously.

"I'm starving."

"Well then, let's start eating," your boyfriend cooed, kissing your hand.

Inside, your boyfriend had packed some canned soup, a few pieces of bread, a large canteen of water, and at the bottom, a small bag of your favorite candy. You couldn't help but gasp.

"Y/bf! Where did you find that?"

"Well, the last time we went out to gather supplies, I saw it tucked under some metal scraps. I remembered how much you love them, so I snuck them home."

"Oh, y/bf, you're too cute."

After sharing a hug and a kiss, you began to eat the food, reminiscing about the days leading up to this moment.

"Remember when I was carrying the water barrel on my shoulders, and the cap came off, so all the water spilled on you?"

"Yes! I spent the whole night freezing my butt off; I thought I was a goner."

"Well, I found it enjoyable, as you needed me to warm you up," he winked, playfully nudging you.

"Remember when we found that old golf cart inside the grocery store?"

"How could I forget? Remember when you accidentally put it in reverse and smashed the wall?" He laughed.

"Oh my gosh, that was not one of my best moments."

"Hey, I thought it was fantastic. Just my y/n being herself," he smirked, lifting your chin with his pointer finger so your eyes met. No matter the situation, your boyfriend always made you feel loved, protected, and cherished.

A sudden commotion arose from the west area of trees that surrounded the meadow. It sounded like something being hit and dragged across the ground. In a cold sweat, you both turned towards the noise, then back to each other. Without words, your boyfriend put a finger to his pursed lips while drawing out the gun he always carried. Cautiously, he stood up just enough to get a view of what was going on. You knew it wasn't going to be good news when his face lost all the color it previously held.

"What is it?"

"It's the zombies," he replied, his breath hitched, making his voice crack.

"Oh. We'll be alright. We've fought them off many times before. What's one more time?"

He didn't reply, just solemnly looked down at the gun he held in his dirt-ridden hands. You rested your hand on his shoulder and called his name.

"Y/bf?"

"Here, take this," he handed you the gun. "I'll grab their attention while you escape."

"Don't be stupid. We're doing this together. It's only a few of them."

As you looked up, your heart dropped into your stomach. Over the slight hill, you could make out numerous figures stumbling out from the tree line, not just in one area but multiple, encircling you.

"Okay, um, we can do this... We just gotta - "

Your boyfriend cut you off.

"Y/n. We can't do this together, you know that," he spoke in a soft tone.

"We... we can. We have multiple times," you frantically explained, a painful sensation growing in your throat as tears welled up.

"Y/n. Let me save you."

"You already have. Since the day you walked into my life."

"You promised me we wouldn't do any of the cliché 'sacrificing,' remember?"

Pausing a moment, he let out a deep breath, slightly nodding.

"I remember. It's just a lot harder now that we have to actually do it," he choked, his voice slightly cracking.

"Hey, let's just not think about it like that. All that matters is what's going on here," you sternly said, moving your finger between the two of you.

"You're right." He stood up from where he previously sat, offering you his hand.

Gladly, you accepted, standing up before being pulled close into his chest. Together, you both began to sway, dancing to the sound of silence.

"You know, I never thought it would end like this?"

"What do you mean?"

"The world. I always thought we'd get hit by a meteor of some sort."

"I guess I was right, huh?" You chuckled, referring to your end-of-the-world theory conversation you shared years ago.

"I guess so. But either way, it doesn't matter as long as you were with me."

His use of past tense words struck you hard. Was this really happening? Was this really the end? The adrenaline in your body skyrocketed as you became aware that the undead horde was making their final hundred feet. Suddenly, your face was physically moved to block the view of the crowd with your boyfriend's hand.

"Don't look at them. Look at me," he gently commanded, his hand still cupping your face.

Seeking comfort, you instinctually buried your head into his shoulder. Your arms found their way around his neck, and naturally, his arms wrapped around your lower torso. As he held you close, you could hear his heart beating rapidly.

"Thank you for everything, y/bf. You made life worth living."

"There's no one I'd rather watch the world end with."

Your time together was slowly coming to an end as the horde made their final steps, but it didn't matter. For all you knew, your 'world' still had his arms around you... even in the final moments.
