After a week of having Sack and Sprinkle at home, Barf Bag and Donut relished in all of the joys that came with becoming parents. It finally started to sink in that these children were really theirs, and felt blessed to be their mom and dad.
But with those successes also came the hardships. There were plenty of diapers to change, fussy babies, and tired parents. As Barf Bag and Donut were trying to put the twins down for a nap, the reality hit them of just how hard being a parent to two newborns was.
"I haven't been this sleep deprived since my residency," Barf Bag said, cradling a crying Sprinkle in her arms.
Donut, who was gently rocking Sack in his arms, chuckled softly. "And I thought working double shifts at the reception desk was exhausting. But this... this is a whole new level."
Barf Bag smiled, though the exhaustion was evident in her eyes. "At least during residency, there were shifts. This is like being on call 24/7."
Donut put on his best dad smile, "You two sure are some fussy babies, huh.." Donut's comment only made the babies start to cry more.
"I don't think they like being referred to as 'fussy'," Barf Bag joked.
Needle had overheard Barf Bag and Donut trying to sing them to sleep, but to no avail.
She walked into their room, and tried to be of assistance, "I think I have something that will help!"
Needle glanced down at the two babies, and sung them a song she hadn't sang in years:
I dreamed a dream, where no one called me Needy
You dreamed a dream, where nobody called you fussy
We dreamed a dream, of a world with no name calling
Only then can we sleep peacefully, our eyelids falling
Barf Bag's jaw dropped to the floor, "Dang Needle...nearly 20 years later and you still can sing like that."
Needle smiled, a hint of nostalgia in her eyes as she finished the lullaby. "Well, I guess some things never change," she said softly, her voice filled with warmth.
Barf Bag and Donut watched in amazement as the soothing melody took effect. Sprinkle's cries gradually softened to a whimper, and then to soft breathing as he nestled closer into Barf Bag's arms. Sack, who had been fidgeting restlessly in Donut's arms, relaxed completely, his tiny hand clutching Donut's finger as he drifted off to sleep.
"Wow, that really worked," Donut whispered, clearly impressed. "You might just have the magic touch, Needle."
Needle chuckled softly, her gaze tender as she watched the babies sleep. "Sometimes, all they need is a little comfort and familiarity. Singing always helped calm me down when I was younger. I guess it's no different for them."
Barf Bag carefully placed Sprinkle back into the crib beside his brother, her heart swelling with gratitude. "Thank you, Needle. We've been trying everything to get them to sleep, but nothing seemed to work."
As they stepped out of the nursery, Barf Bag paused at the door, glancing back at her sleeping children. The hardships of parenthood were real, but so were the beautiful, tender moments like this. She knew there would be many more sleepless nights, but with Donut by her side and the support of friends and family, she felt ready to face whatever challenges came their way.
"Let's get some rest while we can," Donut said, gently leading Barf Bag down the hallway. "We'll need our energy for tomorrow."
Once Donut and Barf Bag made their way to their room, Needle was stopped by Coiny and Pin, who were staring right at her, smirks on their faces.
