Kieran eventually went to sleep after pacing for hours between the living room and bedroom. Should he go in? Should he stay out? His body told him to take what was rightfully his, while his wavering mind held back.

It physically hurt to smell Teru's sour pheromones, knowing he was distressed because of his stupidity. Kieran heard his omega scratch the walls in agony. It made him do the same to the sofa. There was nothing left of it but foam chunks and springs on the floor.

There was one time he almost entered, sensing his omega's cycle becoming worse. Kieran needed to be next to him. He approached the master bedroom and peaked around the corner, eyes zoning in on the sight.

Teru was on all fours, ass high in the air. His agitated purr was erratic. It had no rhythm or sense. His arms reached between his legs and stuck three fingers inside. A small moan left him.

The alpha stroked his aching cock, watching Teru with blazing lust. That position was perfect to thrust so deep inside, his seed would never see the light of day. And the scent...fuck. That scent was his undoing. The sight alone was enough to make Kieran pre-knot, wincing when the hood flared up.

He took a step forward, desperate for relief now.

Kieran paused when he heard sniffles and quiet crying. Teru's fingers were not long enough to reach his sweet spot. He gave up and wrapped himself in a blanket.

Look what you did, Pride mocked. Your incompetence in taking care of his needs resulted in this. You don't know how to love him, it taunted him, using the same words Teru purred as a weapon earlier.

If Kieran had not been a rut and was more rational, he would've told his inner sin to shut the fuck up. It didn't know what it was talking about. Yes, he overreacted when Teru tried to use his authoritative pheromones, but to say he didn't know how to love him? Bullshit.

Except...

That wasn't the case today, not this deep into his season that never seemed to end. His alpha side was too sensitive, too far lost to reject the other voice whispering toxic nothings. For Pride to go out of its way to admit a fault, it must have been true.

Right?

Do I actually not know how to love him?

He let go of his cock in shame, staring at the lump of blankets and pillows on the bed. He hesitated. They were both not communicating. This was the time to listen the most. Why was it so difficult when they both knew how the other felt?

"—away," Kieran heard partly. Hmm? What did Teru mumble from under the pile?

"Go away."

It was muffled, but he heard it. Unbelievable. Even when Teru was in heat and knew his destined alpha was nearby, he still rejected Kieran with an actual command.

Ouch.

But, Kieran was a vampire of his word and honor. The controlling pheromones did not reach him, but he made the regrettable decision to retreat and lock himself in Teru's previous bedroom.

An insufferable cold wave rippled through him, forgetting several hours of the night.

During the aggressive rut round without a partner, his teeth throbbed. He needed to bite new marks. Find that connection. Feel his mate's soul. Not having a nape to do this, he ravaged his right hand. The old scar ripped open, skin and flesh torn off the bone. It hurt. He didn't care. This was nothing compared to Teru's suffering. The wound healed in seconds, only for him to do it again.
