I first met him in high school. He was just starting his freshman year while I was in my junior year. I had always struggled somewhat with making friends, even after being in high school for nearly three years. It's not that I didn't want friends, it's just that I often felt intimidated by my classmates, even sometimes inferior. Maybe it was low self-esteem, maybe not; whatever issue I had with making friends, helped me to meet a person who would become the most important thing in my life.
One day at lunch, I spotted a dark haired boy with soft, pouty lips sitting alone. He seemed approachable and seeing as I didn't really have anyone to sit with, I approached the boy.
"Hi." I spoke up.
He looked up at me, a slightly confused expression on his features.
"Mind if I sit here?"
"Not at all."
I sat down in the chair across from him, feeling a bit awkward and beginning to regret my decision until he spoke up.
"Don't you wanna sit with your class?" He questioned.
"Not really." I answered truthfully.
I was worried he would ask why, but he didn't.
"I'm Jimin."
"I'm Y/n."
"What grade are you in?" He asked. "I can tell you're a bit older."
"I'm in eleventh grade. What about you?"
"Ninth."
"Ah. So you're just starting high school."
"Mhm." He nodded.
"How do you like it so far?"
"It's different. The hallways are much more cramped, that's for sure." He commented.
"Oh, definitely. It's horrible. I wish they could make the hallways just a little bit wider."
"That would help a lot."After that day, Jimin and I would sit with each other at lunch. We became more comfortable around each other and discovered that we had quite a bit in common. He would often walk me to class before going to his own. We did anything and everything to spend time with each other. When we weren't at school, we were texting or making plans to hang out after school. I usually drove, until Jimin was old enough to get his own license, of course.
It didn't take long for me to develop a crush on the chubby-cheeked boy. However, I didn't say anything because of the two year age gap.
After I graduated, Jimin and I continued to stay in touch. Sometimes he would stop by my house when he was free and we would take off and do something fun. It was a bit more difficult to hang out since I didn't have to go to school and he did, but we made it work.
Jimin enjoyed dancing and would practice whenever he could. One of our hangout days took place in a nearby dance studio Jimin booked for a few hours. He did a few routines for me and then helped to teach me some moves. That was probably my favorite thing we ever did.The night of Jimin's graduation was something I'll never forget. I showed up dressed in my nicest clothes with a card and a small bouquet of roses. I clapped so loud when he got his diploma, even going as far as yelling his name when he stood up to receive his diploma. That caught his attention and made him laugh.
Afterwards, I met up with him, congratulating him on his accomplishments and giving him the roses and graduation card.
"I hope it's not too cheesy that I got you flowers." I chuckled.
"Not at all. They're beautiful."Most people have a get-together after graduation with their families, while others immediately take off to their tropical graduation trip destination—not me and Jimin. He wanted to go our favorite fast food restaurant. I couldn't say no. I thought that was all, until he pulled up to a cliff overlooking the city. He retrieved a blanket from his backseat and laid it across the hood of the car where we sat and ate our food. I was surprised at the romantic gesture, but didn't think too much of it, until Jimin spoke up.
"I'm sure you're wondering why I brought you out here to this beautiful spot."
"A little."
"There's something important I want to tell you. I promised myself I would do this tonight, so here it goes. I've liked you for quite some time now—since I was in tenth grade, actually. I wanted to say something the night you graduated, but I thought you would say no because, well, I was still in school and you were graduating. If the age gap makes you uncomfortable or if you don't feel the same, that's fine. I can handle it."
I broke out into a grin. "Jimin, I feel the same. I've liked you for so long, but I didn't want to say anything because I thought you weren't okay with the two year age difference."
"What? No. That doesn't bother me at all."
"Me neither." I let out a short laugh, unable to believe this was actually happening.
Jimin chewed his bottom lip nervously, glancing over at me.
"Can I kiss you?" He asked shyly.
"Of course you can."
