Jimin's feet made indentions in the warm sand as he walked down the beach, watching the sun dip down closer to the horizon. The refreshing ocean breeze blew against him, pushing his wispy hair back away from his face, the blonde strands whipping wildly in response to the strong breeze. There's nothing better than a nice walk along the shore after a long day.
As he proceeded down the beach, he heard a voice being carried by the wind. He listened carefully, making out what sounded like singing, the light and airy notes drifting through the air, reaching his ears. The pleasant sound piqued his interest and beckoned him towards it. His feet seemed to move on their own, taking him to the source of the sweet melody.
He had no idea what awaited him.

You sat perched on your favorite rock, your usual hangout spot, watching the sunset as you sang quietly to yourself.
Your attention was turned away from the stunning view before you and focused on a second voice accompanying your own. Someone was humming along to your singing. This alarmed you, causing your singing to cease, your eyes peering warily in the direction of the humming. You could have sworn the beach was vacant when you surfaced.

"Keep going. Please." A gentle voice pleaded from the other side of the rocks that kept you hidden.
You gasped, your body freezing as someone's head popped up from the boulders, gentle and curious round eyes peering over the object. The man took in a sharp breath at the sight before him. You, a mermaid, laid upon a rock, your blue/green tail shimmering in the sun that was slowly setting.
You hurriedly backed away, retreating into to the water.
"Wait!" He called out, just before your head was submerged under the waves.
Ever so slowly, you rose back up eyeing the boy warily.
"I'm not going to hurt you." He assured, his tone soft and gentle.
You weren't supposed to be around humans. You weren't even supposed to be seen by them, it put not only you but your whole species at risk.
The gentle-eyed male slowly climbed over the rocks towards you. Swallowing nervously, you sunk down into the water, ready to retreat at a moment's notice. You should have already been gone at this point, but something about this boy made you have some sort of trust in him. Wether it was his soft voice or gentle eyes, you didn't know.

Crouching on the rock you previously occupied, the stranger leaned forward watching you with an astonished gaze.
"Hello."
You didn't respond, too afraid.
"I heard you singing." He continued. "You have a beautiful voice."
You bit your bottom lip as a faint warmth blossomed across your cheeks, sinking lower into the water to hide your face.
"I didn't meant to scare you. I just wanted to see where the singing was coming from."
You can't speak to him. It could be dangerous.
"Can you understand me?" He wondered.
You slowly nodded.
His eyes seemed to brighten at that, a friendly smile pulling at his full lips.
"I'm Jimin."
Jimin.
Blinking, you swam closer to the rock closer to him, suddenly intrigued. He didn't have any weapons, no nets, nothing.

He watched you with round eyes filled with wonder. Jimin should have been startled by the sight of a mermaid, but he wasn't. In fact, he was intrigued. He wanted to know more about you, find out what life was like under the waves. Was it like the movies always showed?
These were questions he wanted answered, but he can't get answers if you're not talking.

"What's your name?" He inquired softly, his tone gentle and friendly.
You opened your mouth to speak only to snap it shut.
You shouldn't do this.
You can't do this.
"Y/n." You answered meekly.

Now you've done it.

"Y/n." Jimin repeated with a warm smile, your name sounding oh-so-sweet rolling off his tongue. "It's nice to meet you."
"I have to go."
"Wait." He reached out causing you to flinch away.
"Sorry." He murmured. "Please don't go. I want to talk to you."
"Why?"
"You're interesting."
Interesting?
"Do you come to the surface often?" He asked.
You nodded. "Once a day."
"At the same time?"
You gave another nod.
"What do you come to the surface to see?"
"Sunset."
A smile broke out on his face. "That's what I was doing today. I like to walk along the shore and watch the sunset. It's calming."

Jimin could tell you were uneasy around him, which was understandable, but it made him feel a bit sad. He wasn't going to hurt you, he just wanted to learn about you.
"Sorry I'm asking all these questions." He apologized. "I've just never met a mermaid before. I didn't even know they existed and now that I know, I would love to learn about you and your life."
"You want to study me?"
"No. Just talk. Learn." He explained. "If you'd like, you can ask me questions too. I can tell you anything you'd like to know about life on land."
He's offering to give you information? Willingly? You are a little curious about land and how different it is from the ocean. What better person to learn from than someone who lives on land. Not to mention you've already initiated a conversation with him. There's no going back now.

"What do you call those?" You pointed to the things in his hand, the objects unfamiliar to you.
"Ah. Shoes. Though, these are called flip-flops, they're another type of shoe." He proceeded to put the things on his feet, demonstrating how they're worn.
"Why do you wear them?" You asked.
"To protect my feet. Human feet are pretty sensitive and we can't walk on hot or rough surfaces without something to protect them. There are sneakers that cover the whole foot, boots, sandals, or flip-flops."
"Weird." You murmured, glancing down at your tail swishing in the water, imagining a pair of feet donning flip-flops.
You didn't know what all these other types of shoes looked like, but you imagined they looked just a silly, if not worse than the flip-flops on Jimin's feet.
"I hope this question doesn't sound silly," He spoke up suddenly, sitting back on the rock. "but I'm curious. Can you talk to sea creatures?"
You had to hold back a laugh. "No. Fish don't talk."
Jimin dropped his head in his hands, giggling at the absurdity of his own question. Of course fish can't talk.
Truthfully, you didn't mind his question. It was funny, plus you don't expect him to know about how things work where you're from.
"Sorry." He apologized. "I'm only going off of what I've seen in movies."
"Movies?" Your head tilted.
"They're stories acted out by these people called actors."
"Oh. Like a play."
"Yes, how'd you know that?"
"We have plays where I'm from. People in our city act out battles and stories that have been passed down."
"Movies are like a play, except they're not acted out live. They're recorded on something called a camera."
"Oh." You nodded. "What's a camera?"
"It's a device you use to capture a photo or video."
Your head tilted in confusion. These words were foreign to you.
"Ah. One moment." Jimin began digging around in his pocket, retrieving his phone.
You stared at the strange object, watching as an image with numbers appeared on it, making you gasp.
"This is a cell phone. You can talk to people on it, you can listen to music, and take photos or videos. There's other stuff you can do but I won't overwhelm you with all that right now." He tapped on the device, opening up his camera before turning it to you.
You were met with a reflection of yourself, making you jerk back slightly out of surprise.
"See, if I tap this button, it takes a photo." He demonstrated, pulling up the picture he had just taken of you.
"Wow."
"I can also take a video." He held the phone up to his face and waved before turning it back to you, showing the video he had just recorded.
"Ooh." You watched the screen with wide eyes, intrigued by this human device called a cell phone. "So, movies are made like that?"
"Yes, except the cameras they're recorded on are really big."

The two of you continued taking and asking questions back and forth, you more so than him. You had learned a lot and were genuinely enjoying your time with this human. Unfortunately, the sun had set and there wasn't much daylight left, just a dark blue hue that barely illuminated the beach.
"Ah." Jimin observed the darkening sky. "I didn't realize how late it was. I should probably go."
"Me too. Don't want everyone to worry."
"Right. I'm sure you have people to get back to."
You nodded.
"Can I come back and see you again?" He asked.
He wants to meet up again? Should you accept? You've already risked the safety of your kind by speaking to him. On the other hand, you've spoken to his for this long and he seems like a genuine guy. Plus, you find it impossible to say no to Jimin, his eyes gleaming with anticipation.
"You can."
A brilliant smile spread across his face at your answer. "Same time tomorrow?"
"Same time tomorrow."
