Like all my AUs, I'm putting my own twist on this.

Word count: 5,890

A sigh of exasperation slipped past your lips as you scrubbed the floors, working tirelessly to finish up your daily chores.

A shrill shriek rang out, making you flinch.
"It's from the prince! It's from the prince!" Screeched one of your stepsisters.
Moments later, you heard your other stepsister cut in.
"It's not from the prince, you dunce. It's from the castle."
"The prince lives there, so it's basically like him sending it."
"It is not."
"Is too."
You rolled your eyes at their ridiculous arguing, though you were curious to know why your family had received something from the castle.
You glanced up, peering into the next room where your stepsisters were, still arguing back and forth.
"What is all this commotion about?" Your stepmother asked, walking up.

You quickly turned your attention back to the floors, not wanting to raise suspicion or draw attention to yourself.

"It's something from Prince Hoseok!" One of your stepsisters squeaked.
"It is not. It's just from the castle." Your other stepsister corrected.
"Give me that."
The envelope was snatched from the sister's hand and opened immediately.
Your stepmother's brows raised as she read it.
"What is it? What is it?"
"We've been invited to a grand ball this weekend. It seems the prince is looking for an eligible young maiden to marry."
You let out a silent gasp as you overheard the words of your stepmother. You were all invited to a ball? Your heart leapt with excitement at the thought of attending a royal ball and possibly getting to meet the prince.

"You mean we have a chance to become a princess?" Squawked one of your stepsisters.
"It appears so."
Both your stepsisters let out the most obnoxious, ear-piercing shrieks so shrill it felt like someone was stabbing your eardrum.
"I have to start planning my outfit right away!" Exclaimed one of them.
You continued to clean, acting as if you hadn't heard a thing.

You spent the days leading up to the ball working tirelessly, making sure the whole house was spotless, ensuring that you would be able to attend. You assumed your horrid stepmother would try and give you a list of chores last minute, so you made sure to do them all before she had the chance. Not only that, but you managed to find a somewhat decent dress hidden in the back of your closet. It wasn't the nicest by any means, but it was all you had. You didn't get new clothes anymore.

The day of the event, you were being ordered left and right trying to help get your stepmother and stepsisters ready.
It was annoying, but you dealt with it simply because you hoped you would have a chance to go to the ball.

"Well, girls." Sighed your stepmother as she smoothed out her dress. "We'd better get going."
"What about me?" You asked, meekly.
"Oh." Your stepmother frowned. "You didn't think you were coming with us, did you?"
Your face fell in embarrassment as your stepsisters snickered.
"You don't even have a dress."
"I do."
"Oh. That (favorite color) dress laid on your bed?" Asked one of your stepsisters.
Your eyes widened a bit.
"That isn't in the right condition to be worn out." Your other stepsister said. "It's got a bunch of holes in it."
Your heart sank.
They cut holes in your dress?
"Aw." Your stepmother pinched your cheek. "You really thought you had a chance."
You were too busy holding back tears to respond.
"You wouldn't have been able to go, anyway. You're too busy with chores."
"No I'm not. I've cleaned this house top to bottom." You told her. "There are no more chores left."
Your stepmother handed a long list to you. "Then what's this?"
"I already did all this."
"Well, it needs to be done again."
Your shoulders fell in defeat as you took the list.
"Don't look so sad. Tell you what, you finish everything on the list and you can go to the ball." Your stepmother chuckled. "Bye, now."
