"Date him." James says.
"No."
"You want to."
"I wouldn't hate to."
"Then why don't you?"
"Because he's standoffish. Oh, and an asshole. Not to mention--"
"Broken?"
"I was going to say arrogant."
"Oh. Pretend I didn't speak." James zips his lips.
"No, tell me."
"I have to go." He turns on his heel.
"Potter."
"I have to go. You're gonna get me in trouble."
"You do that enough by yourself. Sit." You point at the chair across from you.
James sits with a sigh.
"What do you mean, broken?"
The words spill out of his mouth. He tells you about Sirius' parents abusing him, how Sirius and his brother were really close before Sirius was sorted into Gryffindor and then Regulus wasn't allowed to speak to him. He tells you all of this stuff and more, and he's bawling in the library by the time he's done.
You move across the table to sit beside him, reaching out and touching his arm.
Word travels fast, and Sirius bursts into the library. "Where the fuck is Prongs?"
Someone, apparently, points him in the right direction because he runs over. "Potter." He says.
James sucks it up immediately. "Hey, mate. What's up? Just talking to your girlfriend here." He stands and claps Sirius on the shoulder.
Now you notice his flinch.
James whispers something in his ear.
"You what?"
James whispers again.
"Oh my God. Prongs."
James whispers.
"What?"
He whispers.
"Fuck you." Sirius says.
James makes a show of bowing before him and proceeds to strut out of the library.
Sirius looks down at you.
You drop your gaze and pull your book across the table to you.
"Do you wanna talk, Y/N?" Sirius asks--standoffishly, of course.
"Only if you want to." You answer quietly.
"I don't."
"Sit down and study."
He sits in the chair James had vacated but he doesn't open a book.
You look up at him.
He holds your gaze, as if daring you to say something.
You drop your gaze and push your book towards him, moving your chair too.
"I don't like to be close to people." He says gruffly.
"If you wanna date me, you're gonna have to get used to it."
"You don't wanna date me, Y/N. You just feel bad or think you can fix me or something. Well, you can't, okay?"
"Okay."
"You still wanna date me?"
"Maybe. We'll see. Study."
"Is James okay?" He asks quietly after a while.
"He's okay. He loves you."

A couple weeks later, you agree to date Sirius Black.
A couple months later, and he's barely holding your hand.
"Are you afraid that you'll hurt me, or that I'll hurt you?" You ask.
"I don't know." He says quietly, not looking at you. "Both?"
You reach over and slip your hand into his.
"Can we go somewhere else?" He whispers.
"Sure. Where?"
"I don't care. As long as it's quiet. And alone."
"Let's go up to your dormitory, then."
"What about James, Remus and Peter?"
"James has Quidditch practice, Remus is studying in the library with Lily, and Peter left about an hour ago."
He nods and stands.
"Are you comfortable with this?"
"I'm doing an experiment." He says, and leads the way to his dormitory. "W-Why did you say my dormitory?"
"I figured you'd be comfortable there."
"Do you want me to shut the door?" You ask.
"Yes please."
You shut the door and turn to face him.
He holds out his hands, and you take them, looking up at him.
He takes a couple steps towards you.
"I'm sorry." He says.
"It's okay."
"Could you kiss me?"
"Do you want me to?"
"Yes. But please don't get angry if I... I don't know."
"I won't."
He nods.
"Sirius?"
"Yeah?"
"Touch wasn't designed to inflict pain. It was meant to show affection and comfort. Not all touch hurts."
"I have the scars to prove otherwise."
Those words almost sent you spiraling into a puddle of tears, but you don't want to upset him more so you manage to suppress it.
"I won't hurt you."
"I know. I just..."
"Remember the time I killed a wasp and cried for an hour?"
He nods.
"If I even step on your toe I'll do the same."
He smiles a bit, nodding.
"Are you ready?"
He nods, so you stand on your tiptoes and kiss him.
You pull back enough to look at him.
He's crying.
"Did that hurt?"
He shakes his head.
"Was it nice?"
He nods.
"Put your hands on my waist."
His hands slip out of yours and onto your hips.
You move your hands to his arms, but don't dare go any farther. "It's okay." You remind him.
"I want you to be happy with me."
"I am."
"I do want to be... intimate."
"You don't have to be. It's okay."
"But I love you."
He jerks both of his hands from your hips and backs away immediately. "I'm sorry." He sounds panicked.
"No, it's okay. It's all right." You hold out your hands. "It's okay."
"I'm sorry." He backs away.
"It's okay. I love you too."
"You.... What?"
"I said I love you too."
"Nobody loves me."
"I love you."
"You don't want to hurt me." He says, like it's the first time he's realized it.
"I don't."
"You want to help me."
"I want you to be happy." You say.
"I want to... Can I kiss you?"
"Yeah."
From then on, he's constantly touching you. It ranges from just putting his foot over yours or holding hands under the table to keeping his arms around you for whole conversations or kissing you no matter who's around. When you're in the common room and it's loud, and he's having a rough day, he'll put his face in the crook of your neck, or your hair, or your shirt, and James always looks like a proud parent.
"This is okay." Sirius says one time when he's standing behind you, his arms around you.
"Yeah." You lean against him.
"Do you want... more?"
"No. This is okay."
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be. I like how we are."
"You're kind of clingy, Padfoot." Remus points out one day.
"Sod off, Moony."
"PDA's gross." Peter agrees.
"Sod off, Wormtail."
Sirius' response is kissing you.
He whispers in your ear, "I love you."
