You get out of bed and make your way through the darkness to the couch in the living room where Bucky's sleeping.
"Huh?" He asks sleepily as you sit on the pull-out bed.
"It's me." You whisper, laying down to lay beside him.
His arms wrap around you almost instinctively. Even his metal arm was warm. You fall asleep quickly with his arms wrapped around you.
The next night, you apologize for the previous night, telling him it won't happen again.
"It's okay." He shrugs. He doesn't mind. He likes it.
You kiss his cheek. "I'm gonna go to bed. Goodnight, Bucky."
"Goodnight." He says softly.
"Hey, toots." He says as you're walking out of the living room.
You turn to look back at him, a soft smile playing at your lips.
"I don't mind."
"You don't mind what?"
"You coming in here."
"Okay." You smile and start walking again.
"Hey, lovey?"
You turn again.
"Goodnight."
"Goodnight."
"Hey, doll?" He says again.
You turn again.
"I love you." He says.
"I love you too."
You wait for a second to see if he has anything else to say, but he doesn't say anything, so you go to your room.
There's a knock on your door as you're changing. "Hey, sugar?"
"Yeah?"
He opens the door. "... Where are the glasses?"
"Are you okay, Bucky?"
"Yeah. Just thirsty."
"They're where they've always been. In the cabinet to the right of the microwave."
"Oh, right. Duh."
"Bucky." You say as he's walking sway.
"Yeah, toots?"
"If you call a someone 'toots' these days, you might get slapped."
"Do people not say that anymore?" He turns to look at you.
"No."
"What do they say?"
You consider for a moment. "A lot. But stick with toots. It's cute."
He flashes you a grin and walks down the hall.
Smiling and shaking your head, you crack your door and slip into the bed. You fall asleep almost as soon as your head hits the pillow, but you're awakened shortly after by Bucky screaming.
You stumble into the living room, your heart racing out of your chest. By the time you get there, he's stopped screaming and sits there shaking, his skin glistening with sweat.
"Bucky! What the hell?" You ask, going to sit on the bed with him.
"S-Sorry." He stammers, glancing away.
You pick the glass of water he'd gotten up off the table and put it in his shaking hands. You brush the hair back that's sticking to his forehead.
He looks at you. "Did I wake you?"
"No. I was still up." You lie, keeping your hand on his face. "What happened?"
"Nothing."
"You were screaming."
"No I wasn't."
"Bucky."
"I'm fine."
"Nightmare?"
"No." He says, almost gruffly. He takes a sip of water and puts it on the table.
You lay down, pulling him with you. He lays his head on your chest, wrapping his arms around you and holding on tight. You feel the heat from his breath as he takes long, deep breaths. You lean down and kiss his head. "It's okay."
"I don't want to go back to sleep." His arms tighten around you and his breath hitches. Suddenly, he lets you go and sits up.
"Bucky? What's wrong?"
"Bucky." He repeats softly, holding his left arm out and flexing it.
"Bucky." You repeat, sitting up and looking at him worriedly. Your heart skips a beat.
"I killed people." He says, dropping his arm back to his side. "Innocent people. Good people."
"Bucky--"
"Don't try to rationalize it, Y/N. There's no euphemism for what I've done. There's nothing but the cold hard truth."
"That wasn't you, Bucky--"
"Really? Because I remember it."
"I know, but--"
"You should go to bed, Y/N." He says quietly. "Lock your door."
"I'm not scared of you."
"You should be. I'm dangerous. I'm a deranged psycho--"
You kiss him.
"I'm completely helpless to you." He finishes softly, staring at you.
"Yeah." You smile a bit.
"I'm... I love you."
"I know. Let's go to bed."
He nods and lays down beside you. "'Night, toots."
