Your parents don't want you hanging around Greasers.
So you dated one.
What did they want you to do? He was so sweet, and, besides, they can't control who you love.
And you love Johnny Cade.
You're up in your room one night, doing homework. You hear your mother call your name, sounding displeased, and maybe a little scared.
Confused, you go downstairs to find Johnny in the living room with your parents. He's crying and his face is bleeding.
You waste no time in running to him, nearly tackling him in a hug. "Johnny." You whisper, moving your hand up and twisting your fingers in his hair.
"I'm sorry." He says, burying his face in your sweater. "I didn't wanna come, but I really just wanted to see you and I didn't know where else to go. I'm sorry. I'm sorry."
"It's okay, Johnny." You hug him tightly, starting to cry yourself. "It's all right. Tell me what happened. Was it your parents?"
He didn't say anything, only tightened his arms around you.
"Come on, Johnny, let's get you cleaned up, okay?" You let him go and take his hand, leading him out of the room.
Your mom follows you, but you pretend not to notice.
"Sit down." You say quietly in the bathroom.
Johnny sits down on the edge of the shower. He grabs your hand as you turn to get the alcohol, and you turn around. "I'm sorry." He says, looking like a frightened child.
You lean down and kiss his cheek.
He drops your hand, and when you turn back around, your mother's holding out the alcohol and an old rag.
"Thank you." You say quietly, taking them from her.
She nods and turns to leave.
You sit down across from Johnny on the closed toilet seat.
"Did I get you in trouble?" He asks, not wincing when you put the rag on the gash across his face.
"No." You say. At least for the time being.
Your mother returns and hands Johnny a glass of water before sitting beside him and putting her arm around him.
Her eyes are red.
She felt bad for the 'dirty Greaser.'
He leans into her without fully realizing it.
She reaches out and grabs your hand.
You're shaking.
She stands up after a minute. "I've made up the spare bed, sweetheart."
You take Johnny to the spare room.
You want to kiss him, but your parents are watching.
You want to make everything better, but you can't.
Later that night, you slip out of your room and into the spare room.
"Y/N?" Johnny stammers quietly from the darkness.
You make your way over to the bed and crawl in beside him, facing him.
He's laying on his back, staring up at the ceiling.
You reach up and turn his head, kissing him softly.
He turns his whole body to you, kissing you back.
"I don't want you to go home, Johnny."
"It's all right."
"Hey, Johnny?"
"Yeah?"
"I love you."
He smiles. "Thanks--I mean, I love you too."
"I don't want you to go home, Johnny."
"Are you crying?"
"No." You lie.
He touches your face. "Why are you crying? Don't cry."
"I'm sorry, Johnny. I wish I could help."
"You do. I don't wanna kill myself anymore."
"What?" You ask, starting to panic.
"I used to think it'd be better to just kill myself. No one'd care, 'cept maybe Pony and Dal."
"Johnny--"
"I don't think that no more. I just wanna watch every sunset for the rest of my life with you."
"We'll watch the sunset tomorrow, how about that?"
"No. It ain't safe for you to be out there when it's getting dark."
"I'll be safe. I'll be with you."
"I ain't much good. Dally'n them are always having to save my ass."
"We can watch it from here. You can stay again."
"You just don't want me to go home."
"I like to be with you." You scoot closer and put your head on his chest.
"Would your parents be okay with it?"
You nod.
"Okay, then. We'll watch the sunset."
