"Listen to me." Jocelyn said. "He doesn't love. He can't. Stay away from him."
"He loves me." You'd told her.
"No. He can't. Jonathan could have. Sebastian can't."
"He is Jonathan. Somewhere."

"Stay the hell away from Sebastian." Magnus had told you angrily. "You realize I can't always be there to protect you?"
"You don't understand, Magnus. He won't hurt me. He's Jonathan to me."
"That's why you can't get away from him, Y/N. You need to think of him as Sebastian. Sebastian is evil."

But now you're tired of making excuses for him. You can't any more.
"Jonathan? Can we talk?" You ask.
He looks up at you with black eyes. "Of course."
You sit down across from him, breaking eye contact. "Um.. well..."
Demon blood burns Shadowhunters, and Jonathan's veins are coursing with it.
That's what you remember every time you go to say something to him about leaving, and that's why you never leave.
"Is this the part where you say you never loved me?" He asks.
"No, um..."
"It's okay. I know you don't."
"What do you mean?" You look back up at him.
"My mother never loved me. My father told me it was because I was a monster, and nobody besides him could love somebody like me. I'd thought perhaps you were different. But I should have known he would be right. He always is."
"Your father's an evil man, Jonathan--"
"So am I, then, darling."
"Don't... Don't call me that. Don't guilt me into this."
"I'm not. I just told you it was okay."
"Jonathan."
"You know I won't hurt you." Sebastian says, reaching out and taking your hand.
Think of him as Sebastian.
"Let me go, Sebastian." You say, pulling your hand away.
"W-What?" His hand drops onto the table with a thud. "What did you just call me?"
"I called you Sebastian. And I'm leaving."
"You've never called me Sebastian."
"I do now." You stand.
He stands too. "What happened to Jonathan?"
"Jonathan's long gone. Why should I hold onto something that's dead?"
"I love you." He says.
"No you don't." You shake your head sadly and walk out.

At the Dark War, you find him with a sword through his chest and Clary and Jocelyn Fairchild on either side of him.
You drop down beside Clary.
His eyes are green.
"Jonathan." You say.
He gives you a stunning smile. "Y/N." he says quietly.
"You'll be okay." You run your fingers through his hair, fighting back tears.
He shakes his head. "No. Heavenly fire."
"You are good, Jonathan. You aren't evil."
"I'm more evil than good, darling."
"No. No you aren't." You shake your head.
"You're blinded by affection."
"Look, Jonathan. Your mother." You gesture to Jocelyn. "Look. She loves you. Isn't this what you wanted? She loves you because you're good."
"I'm not." He smiles a content smile.
You press your lips to his. "I love you."
"I love you." He says.
"Get Brother Zachariah." Jocelyn tells somebody.
"I feel so... light." He tells you with a smile.
"I'd imagine so. You don't hurt?"
"Not at all."
"Good."
"I'm sorry." He grips at your hand. "I was terrible. I'm sorry."
"It wasn't you."
"It was me. How could you have loved a monster like me?"
You had been endeavoring to get him to remember the good, and slipping into thoughts of his father wasn't helping your case.
"Because I saw the good in you. Your eyes are green, Jonathan."
"Green?" He smiles.
"Green. Like an emerald."
He lets out a little laugh.
"Look, Jonathan. Your mother, your sister and your lover all love you at the same time. Imagine all the Christmas dinners."
"There won't be any, darling. I'm sorry."
"There will be. I love you."
He smiles again. "I love you more than anything."
"And I you."
Brother Zachariah arrives and makes you all move. He brings Jonathan back to an Institute and insists you all wait.
You sit down by yourself to wait.
Brother Zachariah returns with your green-eyed Jonathan around dusk.
Jonathan comes directly to you and picks you up off the ground. "I can't thank you enough." He says, pressing his lips to yours. It didn't feel forced as it had with Sebastian.
You never would have considered tears of joy even a couple days ago, but now you're sobbing them. "I love you, Jonathan." You wrap your arms around him and bury your face in his shoulder. "I told you you were good."
"Your faith was admirable."
"Your endurance was."
"Now I can kiss you painlessly. Take walks painlessly. Do anything painlessly."
"Yes." You agree with a smile. "How does it feel?"
"Like I'm walking on clouds."
You smile and put your face back in his tattered shirt. "I love you."
"I love you too."
