Your phone dings with a message.
You look at it. You see it's from Tyler and start to smile.
"I can let the lion win" the message says.
The anxiety hits you like a wave as you pick up your phone and call him. You know "Can't Help Falling in Love with You" (by Elvis. You love Elvis) is playing through his phone as you wait anxiously for him to pick up.
"Hi." He says shakily.
"Are you okay?"
"I..."
"You what?" You ask, grabbing your keys and heading out to your car.
"I need you."
"I'm coming. Where's Josh?"
"I don't know. I need you."
"I'm coming, love. It's okay."
"I need you."
"I'm coming, Tyler. Everything's okay."
"Is it?"
"It will be. I'll be there in ten minutes, love. Hang on."
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have bothered you."
"No, it's okay. You're not bothering me."
"Okay."
You're crying and driving. "I love you."
"I love you too."
"Did you do anything?"
"No. I'm just waiting on you."
"I'm on my way, sweetie."
"Okay. Bye--"
"No!" You say quickly, then force yourself to calm down. "Stay on the phone."
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have called you. Silence gives you space. I'm sorry."
"I don't want space, Tyler. I don't want silence. I want you."
"You don't need me."
You barely remember to put your car in park and take your keys out as you jump out.
"Come open the door." You say into the phone.
"It's unlocked." He says quietly.
You open the door and walk in, only hanging up when you see him. He's sitting on a bed, staring at the floor like a lost child.
He stands when you walk in. "Y/N, hey." He smiles a bit.
You drop your phone on a table and go to wrap your arms around him. "Tyler."
He turns his face into your shirt. You kiss his head, sighing.
He clutches at your arm. "Please don't leave me."
"I won't. I promise."
"I'm terrified."
"Me too."
"I'm sorry, please don't cry. I'm sorry." He says, wiping away your tears with his thumb.
"I really love you, Tyler."
"I love you."
"I don't want to live like this." He says.
"Let me show you a song." You say, grabbing his phone.
You play Holding on to You.
He looks at you.
"You can't tell people that and not live by it, love. You can do this."
"Should I play you Migraine?"
"No. No Migraine. Nobody's dying."
He pulls you to him and kisses you. "I'm okay." He tells you.
He's lying. You know it, and he knows you know it.
You don't say anything, you just kiss him back and hope it conveys all you need to say.
"So all I have to do to get you to kiss me like that is be suicidal?" He mumbles against your lips.
You kiss him again, as deeply as you can without it being gross.
"You're beautiful. You're perfect. I'm so lucky to have you. I love you."
"I love you too." You pull away, taking his hands in yours. You look up at him, wanting nothing more than to see his adorable, elated smile.
He stares down at the floor.
You wish you could do something to make this better--anything to make it better.
You let go of his hand and he reaches up, clutching at your hand like a drowning man clutches at straws. He drops his hand when you put yours on his cheek. He leans into it. "I'm sorry you have to deal with me. I know you have your own stuff."
"I'm all right. I enjoy being with you."
"Even when we just sit here because I'm too messed up to do anything else?"
"Yeah. Especially then."
He closes his eyes.
"Let's go to bed." You suggest.
"I wanna be with you."
"I'll stay here."
"But I want to spend time with you."
"I'll be here tomorrow."
You want him to go to bed. You know he'll feel better in the morning.
"I don't want to let you go."
"You don't have to. Bed. Come on, love. Let's go." You stand.
He stands up and kisses you lightly before putting his forehead to yours. "I don't have the energy to kiss you how I want to. Remind me in the morning."
"Definitely."
You lay down in a bed and he wraps his arms around you tightly.
"You aren't alone, Tyler. I'm right here. I always will be." You whisper.
"Thank you. You too, baby."
"I'm can't sleep." Tyler whispers just as you're falling asleep.
"Let's go on a ride."
"A ride?"
"Yeah. I'll drive."
He follows you out to your car. "I love you." He reaches over and takes your hand.
"I love you too."
You drive until he falls asleep, then you return to his place and go inside.
When you wake up the next morning, Tyler's gone. You sit up quickly.
Josh is asleep in the other bed.
You get up and shake him. "Josh!"
"What?" He mumbles, not opening his eyes.
"Where's Tyler?"
"Getting breakfast. Go back to bed." He grabs your arm and pulls you into bed.
Your mind at ease, you go back to sleep.
You don't wake up again until Tyler comes in with breakfast. Josh waves his hand dismissively, but you get up and wrap your arms around Tyler's neck.
"Kiss me like you want to." You remind him.
He kisses you deeply.
"Gross, stop." Josh says. "I want to sleep, not be traumatized."
"Go back to sleep." Tyler says.
Josh mumbles agreement.
"I'm sorry about last night." Tyler says quietly, putting his forehead against yours. "I'm better now."
"Good."
With great difficulty, he pulls away and hands you your breakfast.
You sit down at the table, and he puts his foot on top of yours.
"Tyler?"
"Yeah?" He looks up at you with his endearing smile.
Your plan had been to comment on how attached he was being, but at that smile, you don't have the heart.
"I love you." You say instead.
He grins. "I love you too."
