"Only puppets whose sole purpose was to entertain."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We were two dolls in the puppeteer's bag.
We did our job, with stitched smiles and flappy limbs.

We did wholeheartedly for the children.
For their smiles and eyes of wonder.

For it was the only thing that kept us alive.

The puppeteer was an ominous fellow.
He drank with no remorse and his wife had to get her own job when she realised the money he got from shows was being wasted.

We were witnesses to it all.
To the lifelessness, to the bottle-breaking, to the struggles and to the cries of their little girl who felt so lonely.

But we were only dolls.
Only puppets whose sole purpose was to entertain.

We lived only to be controlled by our strings and whichever direction we had to go.
We acted out tragedies and comedies to keep even ourselves sane.

So when the modernisation came about, with the invention of TVs and electronic mobiles and gaming consoles...
We were simply outnumbered.

We didn't belong in a world where the children would resort to watching movies with their friends.
Or staying on social media all day.

No, we were thrown in a box.
Me and my female companion were soon forgotten.

We spent our next years in the dusty, dark attic.
Mothballs and suffocation, our only friends.

We were left alone and depressed.
Our company was not easily tangible.

Soon, the bright clothing my companion wore went dark and dull.
Her tattered self depleting each day.

The same for me.
Although I believe she had it worse.

That stitched smile rubbed off.
Those button eyes became lose, even without any human contact.

It was her soul that moved within.
The one that ached and couldn't fixate on staying sane.

We wondered how much the world had changed.
We wondered what little children had to entertain themselves now...

When someone finally came into the attic after what seemed like forever.
We were greeted by a bright mother who beckoned her child to see.

She said she would clean us up.
I saw a twinkle in that little boy's eyes.

We were played with like dolls.
Like puppets reenacting his imagination.

Like what our sole purpose had told us to.
We weren't rotting away anymore.

We simply found a new time to live again.

The End ♥️

The End ♥️
