It sure does sound as if he likes you, or at least favors you over M. It's good that you're speaking to him out of respect. However, if you're afraid that your best friend M might be hurt if she finds out about you two talking, perhaps you could apologize to him and say you can no longer continue speaking the way you do. If he knows about M liking him, you can be honest and tell him that is why you can't talk. If he doesn't, just try being as nice as possible while mentioning that it's definitely nothing personal.
As for your friend liking someone who doesn't show any interest in her, you could help out by trying to get her to consider other guys. The most hurtful kind of love is the one that is unrequited, so do try help her by not letting her fall deeper into that.
