Arthur had seen the flyers for a circus that was coming to Gotham everywhere; it wasn't the kind of circus that went around when he was a kid, the one with lion tamers and trained bears, this one was more acrobats, gymnasts, dancers and physical actors, and he found himself intrigued, especially as the main person shown on the posters was a female monochromatic clown; her black and white makeup was perfect, it was subtle yet elegant, and from a professional point of view he wondered how she made it look so flawless.

Arthur had never been to the circus, but even as a child it was something he had always wanted to do; he could imagine himself in the middle of the big top, surrounded by an applauding audience whose eyes were all on him, as he made everyone, young and old laugh.

He just had enough money to buy himself a ticket for the up coming opening night of the travelling attraction, it wasn't the best seat in the house but being there was enough, and he secretly had a hope that he would be able to bump into the monochrome clown herself.

Arthur's last five days had been shocking; Randall seemed to have it in for him all week, he was being constantly yelled at by Hoyt, and people in general seemed to be more horrible than usual. But as Saturday rolled around he had something to look forward to, tonight was the night of the opening of the circus, and Arthur had made sure that he was neatly dressed, his hair slicked back precisely over his head; if he was going to meet the clown, he wanted to look his best. Even though he knew that he would be in the middle of a huge crowd of people, his desire to see the show was overcoming his usual social phobia and more than anything he wanted to see what the black and white clown would be doing.

As he took his seat in the big top, he couldn't help but be overawed by the noise, colour, and pageantry of it all. It was a feast of lights and sound, and Arthur wasn't sure where to look first; music began flowing through the arena as a group of dancers and acrobats ran into the main ring clapping and shouting to get the crowd warmed up for the rest of the nights events, and even the normally shy Arthur couldn't help but find himself joining in with everyone else.

As the night wore on Arthur had watched in wonder as acrobats, and gymnasts performed amazing feats, jumping and flying through the air as if they could defy gravity itself, their incredible costumes putting his humble clown outfit to shame. He was loving every minute of it, and he felt like a child, his eyes were wide, his breath bated as another performer flew effortlessly through the air; the only thing that was missing were the clowns, and in particular the black and white clown he had come to see.

Suddenly a large spotlight fell on a man in the middle of the ring.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, boy and girls of all ages, I proudly present to you, the lady of fire herself, PIERROT!" The man announced as a wave of applause ran around the big top. A pair of large curtains opened, and out tumbled, spun and flipped a vision in black and white.

Arthur gulped as he saw her, she was more than he ever could have imagined; she somersaulted into the centre of the ring to come to a graceful stop as she landed on her points like an elegant ballerina. Everything about her was in a monochrome palette, her costume, her makeup, and even her hair was made up of the dual and opposing colours.

He couldn't wait to see what the one and only clown in the troupe was going to do, but he most certainly didn't expect what he was about to see; he watched intently as two large men held onto her arms and lifted her up dramatically onto a larger balance ball, her feet constantly moving to keep the ball in place, as one of the men handed her three flaming torches, that she expertly began to juggle, the flames lighting up the air around her.
