Arthur hadn't meant to end up in Gotham River, well that's what he was trying to tell himself despite the rocks in his pockets that were helping to drag him down to the bottom of the dark murky river. He never thought it would come to this, despite everything he had been through he never thought he would truly allow himself to get so low that he would have to do a thing such as this; but recently the world seemed to have turned against him more than it already was, life somehow becoming darker and more bleak than normal, and now all Arthur could hope for was that there was a better world to come.

The freezing cold of the water was seeping into his very marrow, his body losing the last ounce of warmth from his muscles as he sunk deeper and deeper into the darkness.

He closed his eyes, not seeing much need to have them open, for despite the fact that the large brilliant moon was shining brightly in the black sky above, the depths of the mighty river seemed to be impenetrable to any form of light.

Arthur could feel himself slowly lose consciousness, the last of his breath leaving his body, as he allowed himself to drift along in the strong current.

Suddenly his eyes flew open, a bright shimmering glow surrounding him as all he could see were a pair of perfect blue eyes staring back at him, all he could feel was the warmth that was coming from a pair of soft lips that were gently kissing his, his lungs filling with much needed air as whatever this was holding him carefully in its arms seemed to be enabling him to breath.

Arthur closed his eyes again, hoping that he would wake up and this whole sad affair would be nothing more than a dream; but as he felt long fingers delicately brush over his cheek and then through his hair, they sprung open to once again be confronted by those exquisite eyes.

Despite the fact that he was still in the freezing water, the aura around him was making him feel safe, like he could remain in the water forever, and as the lips creeped upwards into a soft smile, Arthur couldn't help but wrap his arms around the body that was pressed against his, sensing immediately that whatever this thing was, it was most definitely female, a fact, that despite his normal reserved nature, made him hold on tighter to his would be saviour.

Suddenly, Arthur felt his body begin to move upwards, back to the surface, back to the light, back to life, the woman that was holding him, seeming to be able to effortlessly propel him back into the air, despite the rocks that weighed him down.

Arthur took a deep breath, working up just enough courage and desire to take his lips from the woman in front of him, his eyes widening in disbelief as he saw the most exquisitely perfect face he had ever seen, a sweet smile on her plump, luscious lips as she brushed his hair away from his features, her own long flowing locks surrounding him like a protective halo.

Even though his situation was still precarious, Arthur couldn't help but notice that the woman seemed to be naked, and even stranger than that, there was the fact that there was a naked woman in the freezing waters of Gotham River that seemed to have no legs, and was somehow managing to still push him easily to the surface.

Arthur found himself nuzzling into the hand that she had placed on his cheek, no long caring whether this was a dream, or whether this was what death was like, all he knew was that her touch was somehow making him feel happy and content, making him believe that maybe his life really was worth living.

As the two got closer to the surface, Arthur could feel himself become sleepy, and despite all his best efforts to stay conscious, in spite of doing all he could to keep his eyes open, he slowly drifted off into a blissful slumber.

Using all her might, the creature managed to push the man back onto the bank of the river, doing her best not to get herself stuck on dry land, knowing that if other human's found her it might not end well. She knew that she should leave instantly, she knew that it would be best if she disappeared as quickly as she had appeared, but there was something about the man that lay unconscious on the thin strip of land that she couldn't help but want to stay near.

He was not the first human she had saved in her long life, and she was sure that he wouldn't be the last, but she couldn't help but wonder why he was in the icy water in the middle of the night.

Cautiously, she moved out of the water as much as she could, placing her head softly on the man's chest and closing her eyes as she listened the rhythmic thump of his heart, his ribcage moving slowly up and down as he breathed in the much needed oxygen.

Slowly she moved her head away, her eyes taking in his fine, thin features as she brushed his wet hair away from his face; she had seen many pretty human males, but this one was different; it was true that he was handsome, but even in his unconscious state, there seemed to be an unhappiness that surrounded him, and she couldn't help but feel that she wanted to take it away, that she wanted to make his life better, but given that her life was in the sea, she had no idea how she could make it happen, then suddenly she smiled, remembering what she had been able to do once before, hoping that she would be able to do it again.

Leaning down she softly whispered into the man's ear. "Remember me human, return to the water, and I will find a way to get to you, a way to help you...... you have my word." With that she kissed him gently on the lips, turning and heading back into the dark water, the last thing being seen was a flash of small green scales that glittered in the moonlight, as the female disappeared back into the depths.

Arthur gasped as he shot up, his hands instantly reaching into his pockets, desperately pulling out the rocks as he crawled towards the water, his hands trying frantically to part the river as Moses had done with the Red Sea.

"COME BACK, PLEASE!" Arthur shouted out, not giving a damn whether anyone could hear him or what they might think about a sodden man screaming at the river.

"Please come back." He said again softly, slumping back onto the bank as he dropped his head into his hands.

It was real, he knew it was, it didn't matter how insane it may seem, how insane it may sound, he knew what he had just seen was the real thing, he knew he had been saved by a mermaid.

With a heavy sigh he looked out onto the watery expanse, the bright moon bouncing off its surface as the waves lapped delicately against his feet; she had saved him for some reason, she had brought him back to land for some reason, but what that reason was he couldn't understand. He would still have to return to his tiny apartment, still have to return to Ha- Ha's, still have to live with a life that haunted him, but as he closed his eyes again, the silky sound of the water seeming to drown out the din of the city behind him, Arthur heard her voice in his mind; it was only soft, so soft that it was barely there, but it was definitely there, and as her words drifted thought his consciousness he found himself smiling a smile that he had had no cause to have before, a smile that he thought he would never have, a smile he never wanted to lose.

Slowly he got to his feet, ringing out as much water from his clothes as he  could before he made his way back up to street that was next to the river, knowing that tomorrow he would come back to the water in hopes that his beautiful saviour would return as she had promised.
