It was morning. Ariana was lying in her bed. She sat up and went over to the window. She held up her hand, took a deep breath, then pulled the curtains wide open.

In Jeremy's bedroom, light from the window suddenly fell on him in bed. Ariana had entered and pulled open the curtains in his room, too.

"Aah! Early. Bad!" Jeremy groaned tiredly.

"Ah. It's not early." Ariana walked up to bed and pulled his cover off. "You're late, for work. Matt just called."

Jeremy looked at the clock.

"Well, maybe he'll fire me."

"Aim high." Ariana muttered before leaving the room.

Soon after, Ariana was talking to Caroline on the phone.

"What are you doing?"

"Just shopping for the party you're trying to bail out on."

"I never said yes in the first place."

"You were never going to, which is why I planned it anyway."

"C, I can't go to my own birthday party when it isn't just my birthday. It's also Elena's, and we've celebrated our birthdays together since the day we were born. Instead of celebrating it without her, I should be searching for my sister and my boyfriend! Elena is also turning eighteen, Caroline. I doubt Klaus will let her enjoy her birthday."

"You're right... but you need to think of yourself for a change, Ari. You're blossoming into an adult, and I'd like to celebrate that! When Elena returns, I'm sure we can celebrate her then. It is your time to shine as of right now. Oh, I almost forgot! My mum wants you to call her."

"Did she find something?"

"An animal attack in Memphis. It's the third one this week in Tennessee."

"And you're sure it's a vampire?"

"Yes, but that doesn't mean that it's Klaus."

"Doesn't mean it's not. I'll call her."

"Well call her on her cell."

"Tell her thank you for her help, please."

"All right. Well, I gotta go. I'll see you in a bit."

"Oh, wait, just... keep tonight small. Please?"

"Wear something pretty! Love you, Ari!"

"Yeah, love you, too, C!"

They both hung up.

"Ugh!" Ariana sighed. Alaric was making the sofa bed that he had been sleeping on and had listened in on the conversation, looking over at Ariana.

"Was that, uh... Nathan and Elena news?"

"Could be more Klaus victims." Ariana shrugged, making herself a cup of coffee.

"You certain Nathan and Elena are still with him?" Alaric questioned. Ariana poured a cup of coffee.

"Easy to be certain when the alternative is that they're dead, and I refuse to believe that." Ariana paused. "Are you sure you're still okay on the couch?"

"Yeah, Yeah, I'm good." Alaric replied. Ariana picked up two cups of coffee.

"Because you spent half the summer on it." She walked over to Alaric. "If you need your own bedroom?"
