Chapter 2: Today Will Be Different
Word Count: 2881

Caroline was in her car at the Salvatore Boarding House, writing to Elena in her Dairy. She got out of the car, moving a box into the house, leaving it at the door way. She continued to take out more boxes from the car.

Dear Ari,

Hope this isn't too messy, because I'm doing the mom thing of grabbing any spare moment to write, even in my parked car.

It's my turn to be the bearer of not entirely bad tidings, because finally there's some good news too. Skylar heard from Enzo... sort of. He left something for her to find. It wasn't exactly a love note, but it looks like he's on our side.

And elsewhere, in actual romance, the Salvatore House is about to become my official residence. I absolutely love it. The water pressure needs some work, but Stefan seems to be very focused on home improvements. Either that or he just needs a way to get out his frustration about losing Damon's trail again.

On a brighter note, there have been zero unwanted houseguests since last week's craziness. Lizzie and Josie are blissfully unaware that they were ever in any danger. I wish Ric and I could say the same. He was just as freaked out as I was, but he's distracting himself by researching our new enemy. Whatever real-life, supernatural thing is controlling our friends, Ric will find a way to fight it.

Damon was sleeping in a lounge chair by the pool, dreaming of his first encounter of Ariana, who he mistaked for Madeline.

Damon's mind

"I'm walking fine, C. I'll be okay, I just need sleep. But I'll see you tomorrow!"

"Okay. Sleep tight, Ari." Caroline hung up.

Ariana then looked up and gasped when she saw someone stood there, right in front of her. Damon.

"Madeline..." Damon smiled, staring right at Ariana.

"Um, no, I..." She looked behind her to make sure that he wasn't talking to someone else. "I'm Ariana. But, um, call me Ana, strange guy."

"Oh, you... you just look..." Damon seemed to struggle for words. "I'm sorry, you just really remind me of someone. I'm Damon."

"Not to be rude or anything, Damon, but it's kind of creepy that you're out here in the middle of nowhere." Ariana said.

"You're one to talk. You're out here all by yourself." Damon reminded her, but she simply scoffed.

"It's Mystic Falls. Nothing bad ever happens here." There was a pause before Ariana began to talk again. "Sorry if I seem a bit edgy. I'm holding in a lot of anger towards my sister."

"About what, may I ask?" Damon asked.

"She, um, forced me to come to this party, and get me drunk, so she wouldn't get all of the blame herself for being hammered." Ariana told him. "But the only reason why she came to this stupid party was to make out with her jock boyfriend. In some ways, I envy that about her."

"You want what she has?" Damon guessed. Ariana sighed, looking down at the ground beneath her feet.

"Honestly... her life does sound incredible. She has found a person that loves her beyond anything. She has found what she wants! But... I guess... I don't know what I want."

"Well, that's not true." Damon chuckled, taking a step towards her. "You want what everybody wants."

"What, mysterious stranger who has all the answers?" Ariana smiled, becoming entertained by their conversation.
